About the Role
Are you ready to build a career in the energy sector where safety, development, and community matter? As a Junior Operator – Transmission with ATCO, you’ll receive hands-on training, build technical skills, and contribute to the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas across Alberta. This is more than just a job – it’s the first step in your journey toward becoming a certified Operator – Transmission.
What You’ll Do:
As a Junior Operator-Transmission, you’ll learn on the job under the guidance of experienced team members. You’ll gradually take on more responsibility, building your technical knowledge of:
•Installation, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning of natural gas facilities, including line heaters, valves, separation equipment, gas measurement devices, compressors, process control equipment, and high-pressure pipelines.
•Using computer-based systems like SCADA to monitor gas flow, pressure, and alarms.
•Performing inspections and field maintenance on high-pressure pipelines and related infrastructure.
•Supporting emergency response and participating in scheduled on-call duties.
•Conducting gas quality tests and contributing to environmental and safety programs.
•Communicate clearly and professionally with customers and team members to monitor and manage conditions along high pressure rights-of-way, including crossings, leaks, vegetation, washouts, and potential unplanned encroachments.
•Stay informed about the operations of customers who receive or deliver high-pressure natural gas and communicate regularly with them to ensure their service needs are clearly understood and met.
•Operate company vehicles safely and responsibly and maintain the vehicles appearance, cleanliness, and routine care.
Operational Commitment:
•Able to work in various weather conditions, participate in emergency callouts, and adapt to shift schedules.
•Capable of wearing and operating breathing apparatus and other safety equipment.
Residency Requirements: Employees must reside within:
•The Fort McMurray service territory (agency), and
•30 minutes from their place of residence to the Fort McMurray Office (262 MacDonald Crescent. Fort McMurray)
What You Bring:
•High school diploma or equivalent (C.A.E.C or G.E.D.)
•Commitment to maintaining high safety standards, including meeting pre-employment screening including Drug & Alcohol testing.
•Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license (with a clean driving record).
•Mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience in gas infrastructure, construction, pipeline maintenance, odorization and gas quality monitoring and adjustment, pressure regulating equipment, compressor station (maintenance, installation, and repair), high pressure pipelines, cathodic protection, or related field work are considered an asset.
•Willingness and ability to learn technical systems and regulatory codes.
•Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
