Position: Journeyman Ironworker / Welder in Huntsville, Alabama
Generally work 4 - 10 hour shifts and 2 - 8 hour shifts
Per Diem is $100 per day if not local
Full time position. Responsible to Foreman or Superintendent.
General Job Description: Rigs, unloads, guides, aligns, places, fastens, bolts, decks and welds all manner of structural steel members to erect steel skeletons. Guides crane operators and operates forklifts, boom lifts and scissors lifts and generally performs duties as required to satisfy the overall purpose of the job.
Key Areas of Responsibility: Safety, quality and productivity, with minimal supervision related to the work. Use of all safety and personal protective equipment for the purpose intended. Use of safety harness and lanyard for proper tie off (Garrison Steel requires 100% tie off). Required to follow all of Garrison Steel’s policies and procedures and those of our customers.
Specific Authority: As given by the Foreman or Superintendent, to direct the work of the crew during supervisory absence.
Required Skills / Training: Working knowledge and demonstrated skill with regard to: simple math, reading and writing English. Reading drawings and specifications. Demonstrated knowledge of all tools and equipment used to perform the work. Proper hazardous material handling and disposal. Proper tie-off procedures. Hoisting signals. General Description of Tools: heavy lifting machinery, welding machines, power actuated handheld tools, hand tools such as wrenches, hammers, bull pins, sleever bars, tool belts, pouches and safety belts and harnesses. Compressors, generators and other large powered equipment.
Tool Policy: Generally, the employee supplies all hand tools belts and bags, and the company supplies all power tools.
Essential Job Requirements: Employees must be able to function well with regard to the following:
Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Must be able to be at work, on time, every shift unless excused by supervision.
Must be able to wear a full body harness with tools and retracts weighing up to 50 pounds for a full ten hour day minus breaks.
Must be able to meet all manufacturer’s requirements to safely wear fall protection and operate aerial lifts.
Must be able to pass testing requirements after training for aerial lift, forklift, signalman, rigging and multiple lift rigging.
¨ Must be able to work in uncontrolled environmental conditions: Inclement weather, cold weather, hot weather, sun exposure, noise, dust, dirt and mud, around mobile equipment, other contractors, and uneven walking surfaces covered with materials, power cords and tools.
¨ Work sites that change as a function of work availability.
¨ Must be willing to travel due to job demands.
¨ Occasional lifting up to 75 lbs., routine lifting up to 50 lbs., up to 20 times per hour with or without assistance.
¨ Bending, standing, and climbing for long periods of time.
¨ Walking on steel intersections over voided spaces while carrying steel.
¨ Any combination of standing, bending, climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, feeling and walking 8 to 10 hours per day.
¨ Climbing ladders, scaffolding, and structures at heights.
¨ Ability to work different shifts, up to12 hour shifts and overtime as required by the work.
¨ Ability to work with relative comfort in confined spaces.
¨ Full use of all limbs and dexterous use of hands.
¨ Simultaneous mental and muscular coordination, visual and audible awareness of surrounding area.
