About This Job

JOB

The Industrial Electrician is responsible for providing electrical, instrumentation, and programming support to the District’s Maintenance and Operations groups. The Electrician ensures that both the District’s and select customer communities', power distribution, electrical and instrumentation equipment is well maintained and functioning properly and reliably. The Electrician will be working on equipment at the District’s wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations, and select customer communities' pumping stations located throughout the District’s service area in Dane County.The Industrial Electrician provides technical competence — understanding of wastewater process equipment, control panels, switchgear, MCCs, instrumentation, and various other types of electrical equipment. The Industrial Electrician fosters cooperative relationships — working with and supporting peers, management, contractors, and customer communities. The Industrial Electrician brings creativity — seeing opportunities for greater organization and efficiency within the Electrical Department, treatment plant and pumping stations.The Industrial Electrician works under the general direction of the Electrical Maintenance Supervisor.The District offers a comprehensive benefits package, which can be viewed here. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

A successful Industrial Electrician must bring the following qualities to the work: Electrical ability. Demonstrates knowledge, aptitude, competence and safety with power distribution, electrical and instrumentation equipment. Possesses troubleshooting skills to solve problems efficiently. Demonstrates the ability to safely and competently use tools of the trade.Problem Solver. Works cooperatively with others, one on one, in a team environment and between teams.The Electrician performs the following duties with increasing independence over time: Test faulty equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test equipment and software, and applying knowledge of the functional operation of electronic units and systems.Inspect components of industrial equipment for accurate assembly and installation and for defects such as loose connections and frayed wires.Install new and repaired equipment in various settings.Examine work orders and converse with operators to detect equipment problems and to ascertain whether mechanical or human errors contributed to the problems.Perform scheduled preventive maintenance tasks, such as checking, cleaning, and repairing equipment, to detect and prevent problems.Study blueprints, schematics, manuals, and other specifications to determine installation and repair procedures.Set up and test industrial equipment to ensure that it functions properly.Repair and adjust equipment, machines, and defective components, replacing worn parts such as gaskets and seals in watertight electrical equipment.Maintain work orders that record performance problems, repairs, resolutions, calibrations, and tests in a computerized maintenance management system.Use the computerized maintenance management system for inventory, work requests, work orders, purchase requisitions and purchase orders.Complies with reliability centered maintenance (RCM) principles by assisting in the establishment and refinement of a schedule for predictive, preventative and regular tasks and ability to fully utilize such a system. Looks for opportunities to expand predictive maintenance program through asset inspection. Service, repair, calibrate, regulate, fine-tune, or test machines, devices, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of electrical or electronic (not mechanical) principles to prescribed specifications.Service, repair, regulate, fine-tune, and test machines, devices, moving parts and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical (not electronic) principles to prescribed specifications.Create, modify and document programs for programmable logic controllers.Use computers and computer software to use, modify and create written documents, spreadsheets and presentations.Communicate information to supervisors and co-workers by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.Train new employees and mentor apprentices in all job related functions.Supervise, instruct and assume the responsibility for the safety of any persons that may be assigned to assist.Provide assistance and service to external customers and other maintenance crews at the District.Perform emergency repairs at any time, day or night, holiday or weekend.Appropriately and safely use the tools of the trade.Maintain a clean and safe environment in the shop.Operate a motorized vehicle for transportation to job sites.Enter confined spaces to evaluate or perform electrical work.Perform other tasks as assigned.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

All individuals in the Electrician position must be able to: Climb stairs and laddersWork with his/her hands extended overhead.Operate small power tools including, but not limited to, drills, saws, and grinders.Use hand tools including, but not limited to, hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenchesMake precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.Safely operate motor vehiclesStand for extended periods.Lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.Communicate with another person using a two-way radio and cell phone.Use appropriate safety equipment including a self-contained breathing apparatus.Distinguish between red, green, and yellow status indicators and color-coded wiring systems.Work in confined spaces.Interact with a computer system. This position is not eligible for remote work, consistent with District policy.
