Position Overview

FortisBC is seeking Indigenous Relations Manager to support the Tilbury LNG Expansion Project. Your genuine, empathetic nature and your skills in negotiation and conflict management make you an ideal candidate! You will work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team to develop integrated strategies that are pivotal to the success of FortisBC's Major Projects.

As our Indigenous Relations Manager, you’ll use your excellent interpersonal skills to build, maintain and strengthen our relationships with Indigenous communities. You’ll enact our Statement of Indigenous Principles to support the development and execution of FortisBC’s projects and initiatives. This work includes engagement through regulatory processes and addressing complex community concerns, negotiating and developing agreements (including capacity funding agreements and impact benefit agreements) and seeking potential economic and community partnership opportunities.


In this role, you will:

Develop strategic engagement plans focused on addressing complex concerns around cumulative impacts, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.

Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to implement strategies that minimize project impacts on Indigenous communities and integrate Indigenous perspectives into project planning, regulatory compliance and engagement plans.
Brief senior management on emerging issues and provide recommendations to advance consent and community support for the project.
Advance and maintain relationships with Indigenous Nations by building trust and maintaining persuasive influence to ensure successful project implementation.
Plan and implement Indigenous Nations consultation to meet regulatory and relationship agreement commitments.
Design, develop, and execute capacity building and engagement initiatives through consistent and transparent communication with Indigenous Nations
Facilitate resolution of conflicts by tailoring approaches to strengthen Indigenous Nations relationships and facilitate discussions around project impacts.
Collaborate with Indigenous Nations to negotiate terms and conditions of capacity funding and other agreements if needed, in order to address community concerns.


What it takes:

Post-secondary education in a related and recognized program.

5 years of demonstrated success in the field of Indigenous Relations.
Ability to manage issue-related conflicts and issue resolution capacity (negotiation skills).
Ability to meet firm deadlines with minimal supervision.
Project management expertise and balancing competing priorities.
Comfortable delivering presentations and navigating challenging conversations.
Ability to assert interests with competing perspectives.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with a panache for team-building.
Ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships representatives from levels of government.
Demonstrated Indigenous relations experience with communities in British Columbia
Demonstrated ability to complete applications and obtaining permits through British Columbia and Canadian regulatory agencies, (e.g. BC Utilities Commission, BC Environmental
Assessment Office, BC Energy Regulator, Impact Agency Assessment of Canada).

In this role, you will have the option to participate in a flexible work program, enabling you to work from an approved flex location in British Columbia up to 85 days a year (equivalent to approximately two days a week), subject to business or operational needs.
