JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Hydroelectric Operating Technician Trainee


Reporting to the First Line Manager Operating, this position is responsible for shift or day basis, participating in planning and carrying out operating activities for generating stations, control dams and related facilities and structures.



KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES


Operate and monitor assigned equipment, units, dams, water reservoirs , and auxiliary systems to ensure safe and reliable performance; identify and address abnormalities, inefficiencies, and hazards.

Apply Work Protection Code (WPC) procedures up to the level of training, including acting as controlling/issuing authority for assigned equipment as required.
Support watershed management by ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, social, and environmental requirements.
Lead and coordinate the assessment, prioritization, and scheduling of equipment outages, including evaluating outage applications and initiating necessary actions.
Manage and recommend solutions for planned and unplanned outages affecting generation equipment to minimize operational impacts.
Respond appropriately to electricity system or plant contingencies, taking timely corrective actions.
Communicate and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
Prepare accurate reports, maintain required documentation, and uphold good housekeeping, emergency preparedness, and safety practices to protect the health and well-being of self and others.



QUALIFICATIONS


2-year post-secondary diploma in related study such as Power Engineering, Instrumentation, Electrical Diploma
Candidates must demonstrate minimum education qualifications by providing proof of education
Candidates will be required to successfully complete aptitude testing in order to proceed in the selection process.
Experience of a practical nature, preferably associated with operating, electrical trades
Knowledge of and willingness to use appropriate safety measures and equipment
Demonstrated ability to explain practical technical knowledge relating to previous work experience and/or education
Able and willing to work in a Control Room environment and react to multiple requirements at a time
Flexible/adaptable regarding changes in work routine and travel to other work locations
Ability to perform effective prioritization and ability/experience with multitasking situations
Can demonstrate project/team skills with ability to assume leadership role
Ability to work variable shifts and under station working conditions
Ability to travel; a valid Class G Driver’s License is required
Proven experience in a control room environment – electrical, utility as a power engineer is an asset
Knowledge and experience of hydroelectric generators, protection systems, governor systems, etc. is an asset.

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
