Summit Nanotech is seeking a local, part-time HSE Supervisor to lead health, safety, and environmental initiatives at our Calgary site. You will be part of a collaborative global cross functional HSE network led by our Chief Technology Officer. You are someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, influences culture without direct reports, and can balance regulatory compliance with practical, proactive solutions. Success in this role requires flexibility, strong communication skills, and the ability to drive continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental practices.
As the HSE Supervisor, you will be a change agent and
safety leader driving compliance, continuous improvement, and safe work practices across the organization.
You’ll collaborate closely with global HSE Supervisors and Calgary-based chemical safety personnel to ensure alignment with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Canadian environmental regulations.
- Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure adherence to Alberta OHS, environmental, and other applicable Canadian regulations.
- Monitor changes in legislation and update policies and procedures accordingly.
- Program Development & Change Leadership
- Periodically review and update our existing HSE policies, procedures, and standards.
- Drive continuous improvement and foster a culture of safety and sustainability.
- Act as a change leader, building employee buy-in for safe behaviors and proactive risk management.
- Co-chair the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC)
- Ensure that SOPs are up to date – delegating drafting to team members.
- Training & Awareness
- Coordinate safety and environmental training programs for employees and contractors.
- Maintain training records and ensure compliance with competency requirements.
- Facilitate employee engagement in safety and sustainability initiatives.
- Audits & Inspections
- Plan and conduct site inspections and internal audits.
- Support third-party or regulatory audits, ensuring corrective actions are completed.
- Incident & Emergency Preparedness
- Lead incident investigations and root cause analyses.
- Maintain and test emergency response plans through drills and exercises.
- Ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented effectively.
- Operational Safety
- Oversee hazard assessments, chemical management, PPE programs, and safe work procedures.
- Support laboratory and pilot plant teams with risk assessments and safe process design and operations.
- Collaboration & Reporting
- Coordinate with HSE Supervisors in Denver and Santiago on global initiatives.
- Track and report leading and lagging HSE performance metrics.
- Act as the Calgary site’s HSE contact for employees, contractors, and regulators (along with CEO and CHO as additional main contacts).
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field.
- Minimum 5+ years of HSE experience in laboratory, R&D, pilot plant, or industrial settings.- Strong knowledge of Alberta OHS and Canadian environmental regulations.
- Demonstrated success in driving change management and building safety culture.
- Experience with process safety is a plus.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and leadership skills.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and recordkeeping.
- Experience with Workhub or other HSE platforms.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating across global teams.
