Job Summary
The Gas Controller monitors and controls pipeline systems remotely using the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system from the Control Room. The role ensures safe and uninterrupted transportation of natural gas and liquids, maintains system integrity, and responds to alarms and operational changes in compliance with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulations and company procedures. This position is structured in three levels (I through III), each reflecting increasing autonomy, technical expertise, and leadership responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
•Monitor pipeline integrity and respond to alarms and operational alerts through the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
•Coordinate emergency response efforts and make appropriate internal and external notifications.
•Ensure uninterrupted transportation service of natural gas and liquids through the pipeline system.
•Monitor system performance and notify appropriate personnel when maintenance or calibration is needed.
•Set flow rates and remotely operate control valves to meet scheduled customer nominations and maintain required pressure levels.
•Work with field personnel to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues affecting pipeline operations.
•Maintain accurate documentation including call logs, abnormal operating conditions, and operational event records.
•Ensure gas quality at receipt and delivery points meets applicable tariff specifications.
•Collaborate with field measurement teams, Instrumentation and Electrical (I&E) staff, and SCADA teams to perform point-to-point system verification.
•Comply with PHMSA Control Room Management regulations and all internal operating procedures.
•Assist customers and internal operations teams as needed.
•Perform other related duties as assigned.
Level-Specific Duties
•Level I – Entry Level: Work under close supervision while gaining familiarity with SCADA operations and control room procedures.
•Level II – Intermediate: Work under moderate supervision. Demonstrate proficiency in job functions and independently manage standard operational scenarios.
•Level III – Senior: Work under minimal supervision. Assist in leadership responsibilities during supervisory absences. Train junior controllers and support the accuracy and completeness of control room documentation and communication.
Required Skills and Abilities
All levels must:

Level-Specific Skills:
•Level I: Possess a basic understanding of gas control operations and SCADA systems. Demonstrate strong communication and problem-solving skills. Show a willingness to learn and follow safety protocols.
•Level II: Exhibit a strong understanding of SCADA systems, gas flow management, and regulatory requirements. Operate with greater independence in routine operations.
•Level III: Demonstrate expert proficiency in gas control operations. Provide leadership and training to others. Communicate effectively and manage detailed control room records. Support supervisors in administrative responsibilities.
Education and Experience
•Level I: High school diploma or equivalent. At least 1 year of controller experience preferred.
•Level II: High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 3 years of controller experience required.
•Level III: High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 5 years of experience required, including advanced gas control or field-related experience.
Certifications
•Required for all levels: Pipeline Control Operator Certification (must be obtained and maintained in good standing).
Work Environment and Physical Demands
This role requires prolonged periods of sitting, frequent use of computer systems, occasional lifting of standard office supplies, and may include limited travel.
