Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Fire Safety Design and Compliance Engineer to join our team and play a critical role in the safe deployment of our Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This position is responsible for ensuring that all BESS designs meet the highest standards of fire safety and comply with applicable codes, standards, and regulations. The role requires a strong background in fire protection engineering, energy storage technologies, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

- Design and evaluate fire detection and mitigation systems for battery energy storage applications.

- Ensure compliance with relevant fire codes, standards, and guidelines, including NFPA 855, NFPA 68/69, UL 9540, UL 9540A requirements.

- Conduct fire risk assessments, hazard analyses, and safety evaluations specific to lithium-ion and other advanced battery chemistries.

- Collaborate with design, product, and operations teams to integrate fire safety requirements into system architecture.

- Interface with regulatory bodies, testing laboratories, AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction), and certification agencies to support product approvals and field deployments.

- Develop and maintain fire safety documentation, including safety case reports, compliance checklists, and testing protocols.

- Stay current with evolving fire codes, standards, and best practices related to energy storage systems.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

- 5+ years of experience in fire safety design, compliance, or fire protection engineering (energy storage or power systems preferred).

- In-depth knowledge of NFPA, UL, and IEC standards relevant to BESS fire safety.

- Familiarity with lithium-ion battery systems, thermal runaway, and energy storage system integration.

- Experience working with AHJs, NRTLs (e.g., UL, CSA, TÜV), and permitting agencies.

- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.

- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
