A Heavy Equipment Field Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy machinery used in construction, agriculture, mining, and other industries. This role involves traveling to various job sites to perform repairs and maintenance on-site, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal machine performance.
- Inspect and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, cranes, and more.
- Use diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot complex machinery problems.
- Perform scheduled maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication.
- Repair or replace damaged components, such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
- Test machinery after repairs to ensure proper functionality and performance.
- Travel to job sites to provide timely repairs and maintenance.
- Operate service vehicles equipped with tools and spare parts.
- Communicate with clients to understand equipment issues and provide updates during the repair process.
- Maintain detailed service records, including parts used, labor hours, and diagnostic findings.
- Complete job tickets and service reports accurately and promptly.
- Follow all safety protocols while working on-site and in the field.
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations and company policies.
- Provide professional and courteous service to clients.
- Offer recommendations for preventative maintenance and improvements to enhance equipment performance.
- Education: High school diploma or GED required. Vocational training or certification in heavy equipment repair is preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in diagnosing and repairing heavy equipment.
- Familiarity with manufacturers like Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, or similar brands is a plus.
- Skills:
- Strong mechanical and technical aptitude.
- Proficiency in reading schematics and technical manuals.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently in the field.
- Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) may be required.
- Manufacturer-specific certifications are an advantage.
- Frequent travel to various job sites in different weather conditions.
- Physically demanding work, including lifting heavy parts and tools, and working in confined or elevated spaces.
- May require overtime, weekend, or on-call hours depending on customer needs.
