The primary role of the Welder / Fitter is to fit and weld components and prefabricated sheet metal, structural steel and heavy plate for a variety of industries as directed by the Fabrication and Welding Supervisor. Thurston Machine commonly utilizes FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, MCAW, SAW, and SMAW procedures and is a CWB certified facility for Steel and Aluminum.
· The efficient and effective preparation and operation of equipment.
· Administrative duties including correct and efficient completion of job operations/administration details, job reports, time cards, etc.
· Upkeep of daily machine and carrying out required “start-up” checks, etc.
· Reading and interpretation of working drawings, sketches, etc.
· Care in lifting, and moving of materials, parts, etc. to protect back and limbs
· Maintaining a safe and responsible working style for self and other workers
· Selects tooling and plans layout, assembly and welding operations, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal, effects of heat, allowance for thickness, machining, weld shrinkage, and welding techniques.
· Lies out, positions, aligns and fits components together, using square, scriber, scale, straightedge, files and grinders.
· Bolts, clamps and tack-welds parts to secure them in position for final welding.
· Sets up equipment and completes final welding of components, using various methods.
· Repairs metal products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping and reassembling parts, using cutting torch, straightening press and hand tools.
· Sets-up and operates arc or flame-cutting equipment to shape metal components to specified dimensions.
· Directs apprentices in fitting together preformed components during fabrication of metal-formed products.
