Reporting to the Environmental Manager, the Environmental Superintendent facilitates the management, construction, approvals, and operational phases of the Mary River Operations and site Project Team. To oversee site activities and provide advice and assurance with respect to environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance through implementation of Baffinland’s Sustainable Development Policy, Environmental Standards and Management Plans

Main Accountabilities

- Managing a team of environmental staff, and ensuring full compliance with all Health and Safety requirements

- Providing strategic direction to environmental staff to monitor and advise Operations on Federal and Territorial compliance requirements.

- Understanding and delivery of complex and interrelated environmental actions related to interactions with the project and the Arctic environment and managing these issues on a day to day basis.

- Oversight of environmental programs, initiatives, monitoring, and inspection schedules, as well as managing associated staff, and consultants.

- Short term (1 year) and Medium Term (3 year) planning to optimize, rationalize, and enhance monitoring programs and initiatives.

- Leading and facilitating on-site regulatory inspections and visits by environmental inspectors and enforcement officers from various federal, territorial and government agencies including Inuit landowners.

- Providing a lead role in environmental incident reporting, investigations, and development of effective and practical corrective actions.

- Assisting in obtaining permits and regulatory approvals for the Project

- Developing and submitting written responses to Inspectors and agencies as required to address identified or potential environmental concerns and developing/presenting action plans.

- Provide technical support for the Project to ensure overall site environmental compliance to all permits, licenses, government/agency regulations, and other legal agreements with landowners.

- Assuming a key leadership role in environmental management and instilling sustainable development values in employees of the company through coaching and operations management.

- Works closely on a day to day basis with Sustainable Development, Environmental and Operations Management and superintendents from other departments to maintain environmental compliance while optimizing construction and operational efficiencies.

- Work with site managers and supervisors in the support of risk assessment and change-management initiatives.

- Work with the team to prepare and review regulatory reporting documents for the Project, both short term and long term.

- Manage site environmental budgets related to required regulatory, monitoring and compliance requirements by supporting the preparation of scopes of work and budgets, and administration of assigned programs within allocated budgets.

Main Qualifications

- Bachelor’s or Masters degree in Environmental science, engineering or related program is required

- Professional designation (Biologist, Engineer, Geologist) is an asset

- Valid provincial drivers license is required

- Minimum five (5) years of experience working with government, NGO, and other regulators

- Minimum five (5) years of experience in day to day support, supervision, and scheduling of environmental support staff in the mining industry

- Experience developing, monitoring and auditing environmental practices and performance. Extensive knowledge for relevant environmental legislation, standards and effective industry practices.

- Communication skills: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both written and verbal, for conveying ideas, instructions, and information to colleagues, external parties, and superiors.

- Leadership/Management skills: Ability to organise and direct workflow, operations, and employees to meet company goals. Ability to motivate others, provide guidance, and set team direction, while creating an environment that lets employees work efficiently and productively

- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and draw meaningful conclusions. Ability to think critically, have attention to detail, and the capacity to make informed judgments based on available information.

- Problem Solving/ Decision Making skills: Ability to define a problem; determine the cause of the problem; identify, prioritize, and reach logical conclusions, and decide on appropriate plan of action.

- Time Management/Organisation skills: Ability to efficiently manage time and prioritize tasks to ensure that work is completed effectively and deadlines are met.
