We have a career opportunity for an Environmental Specialist II to join our team!
The successful candidate, under limited supervision, supports delivery of activities necessary for facilities owned and operated by Citizens to achieve compliance with all applicable environmental regulations.
Activities may include communications with internal and external stakeholders relative to regulatory requirements, preparation of reports for submittal to the agencies, and participation in internal and external meetings related to environmental programs.
The Environmental Specialist II may participate as a member of cross-functional teams for the evaluation of regulatory applicability, development of compliance strategies, implementation of capital projects, or other business purposes.
The Environmental Specialist II completes tasks necessary for monitoring the quality of surface water (including storm water), and wastewater discharges from facilities. Incumbent may review laboratory data to perform QA/QC functions needed to validate data.
The Incumbent provides field, administrative, and training support to the following Environmental Stewardship department programs: the industrial pretreatment permitting program, hazardous waste management program, emergency response program, spill prevention program, voluntary remediation program, underground storage tank, clean air program, the clean water program and other regulatory programs.

Minimum Salary: $75,200 (Grade 9)
Responsibilities:
•Implements environmental compliance programs and activities including preparation of permit applications/renewals, permitting implementation, preparation of environmental plans, reporting, recordkeeping, training, and compliance assurance for utility facilities and capital projects. Conducts sampling of various environmental media, facility and site inspections as necessary, including preparation of inspection reports, and development and oversight of corrective actions required to achieve compliance.
•Administrative duties including on-call Environmental Incident and/or the Water Quality Hotline multiple times per year (including nights, weekends, and holidays), participation in the implementation of CLASS and knowledge management, employee engagement and learning development.
•Review and support various environmental projects and tasks in support of various business unit needs.
•Actively participates in the regulatory process, including attendance at both internal and external technical meetings and workgroups.
•Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
•The Environmental Specialist II must possess a bachelor's degree in science, environmental, engineering, or equivalent field of study (Chemistry, Math, Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, etc.).
•A minimum of three (3) years of relevant environmental experience is required. Internships and cooperative programs may count toward the required experience.
•Must possess a valid driver’s license.
•Must have a safe driving record including no history of serious traffic violations, accidents, suspensions/revocations, or DUI/DWI convictions within the last three years.
•Ability to work outdoors for extended periods during adverse weather conditions and to traverse difficult terrain.
•Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures manuals (proficient with Microsoft Office), and able to develop and present environmental training.
•Ability to adhere to Company policies and procedures and demonstrated proficiency in the care and use of all site specific, facility required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), including respirators, gas detectors, confined space equipment, etc.
•Eligible to complete 24-hour HAZMAT Emergency Response Technician Level training and other required EPA training.
•Ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
•Full-time, exempt employee. Work days may vary, based on needs. Position would also be part of a scheduled on-call rotation that includes coverage for nights, weekends, and holidays.
•Must possess a general working knowledge of environmental air, land, waste, and water regulations and programs.
Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
•Understanding of sampling procedures required by EPA Standard Methods.
•Willingness to launch and operate a small boat and become familiar with safe boating practices.
•Knowledge of EPA and IDEM regulations.
