Project Description

Xcel Energy is seeking candidates to support our Grid Transformation Organization, specifically, in Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN. The paid internship provides an opportunity to showcase your abilities to work with various distribution operations groups. The program provides practical work experience to develop your existing skillset, present to senior leadership, and collaborate with key internal stakeholders. Each intern will be relied upon to play a role in achieving department objectives and goals. The program will allow you to apply what you’ve learned in school and further enhance your knowledge through hands-on training and provide opportunities to network and learn with other interns across the organization.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

- Support other engineers within the teams on advanced grid apps (e.g., IVVO, FLISR, Distributed Intelligence) deployment

- Monitor operational efficiencies and support enhancements of the advanced grid apps

- Develop settings and/or settings repository for grid edge assets (e.g., Capacitor banks, recloser controllers)

- Help develop job aids to increase team efficiency

- Develop dashboard or update databases for monitoring automated field devices

This position is for a June 1, 2026 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements

- Current student, Junior status (as of Fall 2026) or higher.

- Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering.

- Able to commute to the service center in Denver, CO or St. Paul, MN.

- Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)

Preferred Qualifications

- 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher

- Completed 2 years of undergraduate coursework

- Experience or Proficiency with data analytics tools

- Coding experience in Python and SQL

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $22.50 to $30.10 per hour

This position is eligible for the following benefits: Pension, 401(k) plan, Paid time off (PTO), Holidays
