Position Summary:
As part of the Engineering Services Team, the Engineer –Rotating Equipment is responsible for providing expertise related to the troubleshooting, design, alterations, repair, and monitoring of rotating equipment. This person will collaborate with operators, maintainers, process engineers, project engineers, and other discipline engineers to ensure rotating equipment related issues are understood and mitigated. The Engineer – Rotating Equipment will deliver practical technical solutions in accordance with regulations, NWR standards and good engineering practices.
Responsibilities:
•Proactively engages maintainers, operators and other engineers/specialists in troubleshooting activities;
•Performs equipment failure analyses and devises practical effective technical solutions;
•Develops and presents technical reports to clearly communicate proposed solutions to stakeholders;
•Ensures proper handoff for large capital changes to the Facilities and Projects teams;
•Further develops and manages small changes and secures funding from the applicable stakeholders;
•Provides technical expertise and quality assurance requirements for major equipment overhauls;
•Provides technical expertise into rotating equipment scope for Capital projects;
•Provides technical input to Process Hazard Analyses;
•Provides technical input into asset care plan development;
•Interfaces with equipment vendors, OEMs and other 3rd party technical expertise as required;
•Reviews health of critical/high energy machinery as well as bad actors to provide guidance to Maintenance and Operations of equipment defects to prevent unplanned downtime;
•Seeks work by engaging/collaborating with reliability, facilities and process engineers, maintenance specialists and operating unit team experts to prioritize response to emergent plant issues and bad actors;
•Maintains engineering specifications and suggests and/or implements changes based on evolving industry best practice and/or learnings from plant experience;
•Engages Maintenance Specialists, Reliability Engineers and other technical personnel to provide a recommended turnaround scope.
Requirements:
•Understands, creates and maintains a visible commitment to process and personal safety, as well as the safety of others; adheres to NWR’s Core Competencies to drive results and a high performing culture;
•B.Sc. Engineering with a current or eligibility for APEGA membership;
•Mechanical Engineer with a minimum of 10 years of engineering experience with rotating equipment design, commissioning, operation, or repairs in a petrochemical / refinery / upgrader operating environment;
•A strong understanding of machinery fundamentals, including reciprocating compressor control systems, vibration monitoring and analysis, mechanical seals, seal flush systems, and evaluation of compressor and pump performance;
•Troubleshooting experience with machinery (centrifugal pumps, compressors turbines and fans) is required;
•Genuine curiosity and demonstrates willingness to continue learning;
•The ability to adapt to changing priorities due to varying plant conditions;
•A desire to strive for the right balance between business and technical requirements;
•Strong knowledge of API Codes and guidelines for refinery / upgrading rotating equipment;
•An understanding of safe work practices and engineering obligations in an industrial environment is required;
•Proficiency with condition monitoring programs such as Bently System 1 and Prognost;
•Proficiency with Process Historian programs such as OSI PI;
•ISO CAT III certification in vibration analysis in an asset.
