This position is entry or developmental to intermediate level position providing engineering support in designated company area, or specific engineering discipline. Performs engineering calculations, analysis, research and design. Under direction of supervisor or work leader, performs routine assignments designed to develop professional engineering work knowledge, gain familiarity with techniques, approaches, practices and the nature of engineering systems, equipment, etc. and to develop the ability to apply fundamental engineering principles and techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out sequence of related engineering tasks. Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives.
This position in the Distribution standards group can be responsible for maintaining our distribution construction manuals or can also be assigned a material group to manage. In each case this person needs to understand electrical and mechanical engineering concepts. They also need to understand how an electric distribution system is built and maintained. They should understand how various voltages are used to serve industrial, commercial, and residential customers. Previous design or construction experience is preferred. They will be responsible to read and understand and apply various codes and guidelines that the distribution system is required to comply to. Some of these are the National electric code, National electric and safety code, Occupational safety and health administration, and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers codes. This position is responsible to source materials from vendors that meet our applications, test these materials, and visit manufacturing facilities to approve the facility. Once products are approved, the engineer will introduce them to the design and field crews. This position also is responsible for root cause analysis for any material failures within their area of responsibility. This position will communicate with many groups within our company, some examples are Design, operations, construction, supply chain, asset management and safety and training. They will also become active committee members for working groups of: Southern Electric Exchange, Electric power research institute, Institute of Electrical and electronics engineers, Illuminating engineering society.
The position will be filled commensurate with the successful candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and education at either Engineer (Associate to Intermediate) level.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
Associate Engineer = Less than 2 years of relevant engineering experience.
Engineer = 2+ years of relevant engineering experience.
An Engineering PhD can be substituted for up to 5 years' experience based on research engineering work on directly related projects approved by executive leadership.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Ability and Experience for all roles and levels:
Knowledge and application of engineering theories and principles, concepts, and fundamentals.
Requires developmental experience in a professional engineering position (engineering title only).
Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives.
Understands and can apply knowledge of configuration management.
Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
Equally effective working independently or in a team environment.
Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
Must be dedicated to continuous improvement and identifying best practice opportunities.
Education Level for Engineer: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering required.
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
