Position Overview
DeerStone Consulting is seeking a technically focused Project Consultant to support our growing portfolio of renewable energy and infrastructure projects in Tribal and rural Alaska communities. This role is ideal for candidates with experience in energy systems, infrastructure development, and utility coordination—especially those who understand the dynamics of working on grant-funded projects and with Tribal or rural utility clients.
The consultant will collaborate with internal team members, clients, and stakeholders to assess energy resources, design clean energy systems, develop feasibility analyses, and contribute to advancing clients’ strategic energy goals and plans. Candidates may work across a variety of projects and technologies, including solar, wind, and battery storage development, hydro and biomass, microgrid planning, and Independent Power Producer (IPP) formation.
This position offers flexibility in hours and employment structure and can be tailored to either full-time or part-time availability.
Ability to Contribute to the Following Tasks & Activities:
•Conducting renewable energy resource assessments for solar, wind, hydro, and biomass
•Performing technical feasibility studies and modeling using industry-standard tools (e.g., HelioScope, HOMER)
•Supporting the development of conceptual designs and system specifications for solar PV and battery storage systems
•Assisting with economic and financial feasibility analyses, including pro forma modeling
•Supporting formation of Tribal Utilities or Independent Power Producers, including reviewing governance and business models
•Coordinating with local rural utilities and assist with grid integration, interconnection strategies, and net metering options
•Drafting project deliverables including feasibility reports, scopes of work, technical memos, and design documentation
•Participating in stakeholder meetings, Tribal coordination sessions, and public presentations
•Assisting in tracking and preparing grant deliverables, including quarterly reports, milestone documentation, and closeout materials
•Ensuring work complies with relevant permitting, technical standards, and grant procurement guidelines
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
•Bachelor’s degree in engineering, renewable energy, or related field
•Minimum 2 years of experience in energy, infrastructure, and/or related technical field
•Strong written and verbal communication skills
•Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others and to manage competing priorities
•Willingness and ability to at least occasionally travel to rural Alaska communities as needed (~1 time per quarter or more)
Preferred:
•Experience working with Tribal communities, rural utilities, and/or Alaska Native organizations
•Familiarity with grant-funded project environments, including reporting, procurement, and agency coordination
•Experience with solar and battery energy storage systems (design, modeling, or feasibility)
•Understanding of rural or microgrid power systems, net metering, and energy options analysis

Travel Requirements:
This position requires periodic travel to remote Alaska communities, many of which are accessible only by small aircraft, boats, or snowmachines. Candidates must be comfortable working in off-road environments with limited amenities.
