Summary:
An EM MWD and Directional Driller job in the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) industry is responsible for real-time monitoring and guiding of the drill bit's trajectory during drilling operations. Using specialized tools, MWD/directional drilling specialists gather critical downhole data – such as direction, inclination, pressure, magnetic data, and temperature - and use the collected and recorded data to assist HDD drillers in accurately steering the borehole to its planned target.
Key Responsibilities:
•Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot EM MWD tools
•Collect and interpret real-time downhole data
•Provide directional guidance and data to HDD drillers for accurate borehole steering
•Real-time tracking of drill path location and direction using specialized tools and software.
•Monitor real-time drilling performance and respond to deviations in real time.
•Collaborate with other MWD and directional drilling specialists to ensure efficient drilling.
•Communicate effectively with clients, engineers, and inspection teams during operations.
Requirements & Work Environment:
•Strong knowledge of drilling principles and wellbore trajectory.
•Ability to operate and maintain EM MWD, software, and other required tools.
•Able to interpret technical data and make informed decisions.
•Previous experience and knowledge of bore planning, execution, and troubleshooting.
•Ability to apply and share technical knowledge and insights to enhance team performance.
•Must be open to continuous learning and committed to mentoring and sharing expertise with team members.
•Collaborate with engineers to ensure accurate and efficient hole placement.
•Proficient in operating and maintaining EM MWD tools and software.
•Proficient in Excel and experienced with CAD and drafting tools.
•Proficient in operating and maintaining directional drilling equipment.
•Willingness to work long hours, including shift work on 24-hour operations.
•Ability to work in remote locations for extended periods.
•Preparedness for working in all weather conditions.
•A minimum Class 5 driver's license, with a clean driver's abstract, is mandatory
•MWD steering hands, or experienced drillers, tankhands, or light rig superintendents with walkover and computer experience, may be well-suited for this position.
