RMS Energy is seeking an Electrical Substation Physical Design Engineer to join our growing team. We are hiring at both the Engineer III and Senior Engineer levels based on experience.
In this role, you’ll support the design of transmission and distribution substations (13kV–500kV), focusing on layout, equipment selection, grounding, conduit, and cable routing. You’ll collaborate across disciplines to deliver high-quality, cost-effective, and compliant designs. Ideal candidates have strong technical expertise in substation physical design. Senior-level candidates should also bring leadership experience and the ability to mentor junior engineers.
Preferred Locations: Remote position; anywhere in the US, excluding Hawaii and Alaska.
Responsibilities:•Lead and execute substation physical layout and design packages, including general arrangement drawings, equipment plans, grounding, conduit and cable routing, and section/elevation views.
•Perform grounding studies, lightning protection analysis, and bus rating assessments to support reliable and compliant designs.
•Select and specify high-voltage equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and structures in accordance with system requirements and applicable standards.
•Coordinate closely with civil/structural, protection & control, SCADA, and construction teams to ensure cohesive and constructible design.
•Prepare design documentation, construction drawings, BOMs, and procurement support materials in CAD platforms such as AutoCAD or MicroStation.
•Lead and contribute to internal design review meetings and provide QA/QC oversight for project deliverables.
•Participate in field evaluations, site walks, and constructability reviews to validate design assumptions and support implementation.
•Ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and utility standards (e.g., IEEE, NEC, NESC, ANSI).
•Support proposal development efforts including scoping of physical design labor, identifying deliverables, and preparing level-of-effort estimates.
•Track and report project progress, technical risks, and design variances to engineering leads or project management.
•Review vendor submittals and peer deliverables for technical accuracy and coordination.
•Promote a culture of safety in all workstreams, including opening meetings with safety messages and reinforcing safety best practices across engineering and field activities.
•Mentor junior engineers and designers to promote technical development and quality standards.
•Assume other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required; Master’s degree preferred.
•Engineer III: 5–8 years of experience in substation physical design, with a track record of technical ownership, coordination across disciplines, and some experience mentoring junior engineers.
•Senior Engineer: 8+ years of experience in high-voltage physical substation design with demonstrated leadership on complex, multi-discipline projects, strong client-facing capabilities, and ability to guide and review the work of others.
•Demonstrated expertise in high-voltage substation design, including equipment selection, layout optimization, grounding, lightning protection, and safety/electrical clearances.
•Prior experience working with load/generation developers, investor-owned utilities, cooperatives, or municipal utilities, EPC firms.
•Familiarity with regional interconnection and transmission operator requirements (e.g., PJM, ERCOT, MISO).
•Engineer-In-Training preferred (for Professional Engineer P.E. license) preferred but not required.
•Able to interpret complex design requirements, evaluate conflicting constraints, and resolve layout issues with minimal oversight.
•Proficient in engineering calculations for ground grid layout, conductor sizing, clearance analysis, and other layout-specific computations.
•Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation; familiarity with PLS-CADD and other substation layout tools preferred.
•Strong communicator and team leader with ability to mentor junior engineers, interface with clients, and support multiple ongoing projects. Strong technical writing and communication skills.

•Valid and current driver's license with a clean driving record.
•Ability to travel a maximum of 25%.

Working Conditions:
The working conditions for this role primarily involve a standard office environment with typical office noise levels. The role requires prolonged periods of sitting, working at a computer, and performing tasks that demand visual acuity for reading and typing. This job may require travel to RMS facilities and other sites.
Physical Requirements:
Physical requirements include the ability to occasionally lift and carry office supplies weighing up to 20 pounds, the capability to move within the office to access files, office machinery, and meeting rooms, and fine motor skills for keyboard use. Proficiency in speaking, hearing, reading, and typing in English is essential for effective communication and documentation.
