The Power Enterprise provides clean, renewable energy to San Francisco through two key programs: Hetch Hetchy Power
, a publicly owned utility, and
CleanPowerSF, the City’s Community Choice Aggregation program. The division also manages the City’s street and pedestrian lighting systems.
This position sits within the
Distribution Engineeringgroup, supporting electric service interconnections and system planning for SFPUC’s distribution grid.
The
5241 Electrical Engineerplays a key role in grid planning, system modeling, interconnection review, and engineering analysis for SFPUC’s electric distribution system.
You will help evaluate new customer interconnections, support grid optimization, ensure regulatory compliance, and contribute to safe and reliable electric service delivery.
This role is ideal for an electrical engineer with experience in electric utilities, power systems, or system coordination.
- Develop and maintain electric system models.
- Perform power flow, short circuit, protection coordination, and feasibility studies.
- Review new interconnection requests (DER, load, solar, and more).
- Conduct field inspections, site assessments, and power quality investigations.
- Prepare engineering designs, drawings, and cost estimates for customer interconnections.
- Track and maintain interconnection agreements.
- Communicate technical requirements clearly to contractors, customers, and internal partners.
- Ensure all designs meet applicable codes, utility standards, and engineering best practices.
- Support the planning and implementation of system upgrades and capital improvements.
- Work with other Power Enterprise teams.
- Support operational guidance and engineering assistance for City-owned transmission and distribution systems.
- May assist with supervising engineering personnel (5207, 5203, 5201) as workload increases.
- Five (5) years
of verifiable professional electrical engineering experience, including
- two (2) years
equivalent to the 5207 Associate Engineer level or above.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering
in the State of California.
- Experience with power system analysis: load flow, fault studies, protection coordination, stability, etc.
- Knowledge of interconnection standards and grid codes (IEEE, IEC, PG&E).
- Experience with SCADA, protection systems, distribution automation, and renewable energy interconnections.
- Proficiency with power system modeling tools (e.g.,
SKM
,
ETAP
,
PSSE
,
CYME
).
- Strong communication, customer service, and project coordination skills.
