WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR This role requires strong leadership, exceptional management skills, and a deep understanding of the live entertainment industry and organizational goals. The Director of Design will work closely with senior executives, department heads, and other stakeholders to ensure the achievement of business objectives. As Director of Design, you will lead and manage our Design Team. You will be responsible for providing direction and mentorship while fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment. Your goal will be to promote a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer. This is a salaried exempt position. EPS adheres to a 40 hour per week schedule, though there are times due to unforeseen demands of projects that more than 40 hours per week may be required. YOUR DAY TO DAY
- Oversee all aspects of the Design Team’s operations, including onboarding, scheduling, time-off approvals, and employee evaluations, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Provide leadership, direction, and mentorship to the design department, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment while promoting accountability.
- Collaborate closely with the Directors of Fabrication, Project Management, and Technical Operations to ensure accurate timelines, deliverables, and clear documentation for installation projects, ensuring all projects meet their schedule and deadlines.
- Oversee the Design Manager, ensuring they effectively manage the day-to-day activities of the design team (including drafters, mechanical designers, and lead designers), and support their efforts in maintaining project timelines and quality standards.
- Lead client meetings and design reviews to discuss, approve, and guide project designs, ensuring they meet client expectations and company standards.
- Manage the department's budget, track financial performance, and identify cost-saving opportunities to align with organizational targets.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including clients, vendors, and partners, and represent the department in leadership meetings and decision-making processes.
- Prepare and review bid packages, ensuring accurate alignment between design needs and fabrication capabilities.
- Identify and implement improvements in design processes, stay updated on industry trends and best practices, and integrating new technologies to increase efficiency.
- Ensure that safety and compliance processes are current and consistently applied, working with the Safety and Compliance Administrator.
- Perform other duties as assigned to meet the evolving needs of the department and company.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field (Technical Theatre, Engineering), or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in mechanical design, with strong proficiency in 3D CAD software, particularly Autodesk Inventor, and knowledge of Revit, Rhino, or Solidworks.
- Proven experience in senior management role, preferably as a director or similar position, with demonstrated leadership and team development skills.
- Experience working in a fabrication environment and managing both new installation projects and retrofits.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with clients, vendors, and team members.
- Strong organizational, time-management, and multitasking skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Experience with budget management and financial reporting, including identifying cost-saving opportunities.
- An ability to stay current with industry trends, implementing new technologies and methodologies to improve design processes.
- Knowledge of modern set construction techniques and/or live entertainment technology.
- Enthusiastic and passionate about projects and processes, with a high level of integrity and professionalism.
- Willingness to work beyond 40 hours per week when project demands require, including weekends and evenings as necessary.
- Ability to show authorized to work in the United States upon hire.
