Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Drill Operator to join our team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience operating Horizontal Directional Drills (HDD) and related equipment for underground utility installation. This role requires precision, attention to safety, and teamwork to successfully complete fiber optic installation projects.

Responsibilities

- Operate Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) equipment to install fiber optic cables and other underground utilities.

- Read and interpret project blueprints, utility maps, and drill profiles to ensure accurate drilling operations.

- Identify and locate underground utilities before drilling using electronic locators and other methods.

- Mix and manage drilling fluids (mud mixing) to optimize borehole stability and minimize environmental impact.

- Monitor and adjust drill head to maintain alignment, depth, and speed according to project specifications.

- Pull back conduit, cable, and fiber following established procedures to protect infrastructure integrity.

- Assist with site preparation, setup, and cleanup, including trenching, potholing, and site restoration.

- Perform routine maintenance and safety checks on drilling equipment and report any mechanical issues.

- Follow all OSHA, company, and industry safety standards to ensure a hazard-free work environment.

- Coordinate with supervisors, crew members, and project managers to meet job deadlines efficiently.

- Document work progress, equipment use, and safety compliance in daily reports.

Qualifications

- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience operating HDD equipment in underground utility construction.

- Knowledge of utility locating and strike alert systems to prevent damage during drilling operations.

- Familiarity with drilling fluids, mixing procedures, and ground condition adjustments.

- Ability to operate additional equipment such as excavators, skid steers, backhoes, and loaders as needed.

- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering plans, schematics, and blueprints.

- Class A CDL with tanker endorsement preferred (or willingness to obtain).

- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

- Ability to pass a pre-employment DOT physical and drug screening.

- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced work environment.

- Welding experience is a plus.

Work Conditions

- Outdoor fieldwork in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).

- Physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs., bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.

- Travel may be required based on project locations.

- Overtime, on-call assignments, and occasional night/weekend work as needed.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $27.00 - $32.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 – 50 per week

- 10 hour shift

- 12 hour shift

- Monday to Friday

Work Location: On the road
