Overview
The Saskatchewan Research Council’s (SRC) Rare Earth Element Division has an opening for a Design Lead to coordinate, lead, and drive resolutions of design-related challenges across multiple engineering disciplines.
Accountabilities
•Lead and supervise a team of engineering technologists and drafters across multiple disciplines such as mechanical, piping, structural, and architectural.
•Coordinate design activities for mining projects, including processing plants, pipelines, storage facilities, and support structures.
•Ensure compliance with industry codes, company standards, health & safety regulations, and environmental requirements.
•Oversee the preparation of design deliverables such as drawings, models, layouts, specifications, and technical reports.
•Work closely with project managers, engineers, procurement teams, and construction personnel to align design work with project timelines and budgets.
•Provide technical mentorship, coaching, and support to junior designers and CAD technicians.
•Oversee and actively facilitate multi-disciplinary design integration including clash detection and review and lead coordination meetings with design teams, project engineers, and construction stakeholders.
•Monitor and control workload distribution within the design team and support resource planning.
•Prepare 3D models and drawings including, but not limited to, mechanical and piping layouts, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), piping details, isometrics and fabrication drawings.
•Support engineering efforts with design concepts, equipment layout and procurement activities.
•Provide support during construction and commissioning phases, including responding to inquiries, reviewing shop drawings and resolving design-related issues.
Qualifications
•A diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Engineering Design and Drafting Technology.
•Registered with Technology Professionals Saskatchewan (TPS) as a Professional Technologist (P.Tech.).
•More than 7 years of design experience in the mining, oil and gas or heavy industrial sector with demonstrated success resolving multi-disciplinary issues.
•More than 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
Skills
•Proficiency in design software (Plant 3D and AutoCAD) and modeling tools relevant to facility design.
•Familiarity of design standards and practices for industrial facilities (e.g., National Building Code of Canada and ASME).
•Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
•Excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills across engineering disciplines and project phases.
•Mechanical aptitude with practical design experience.
•Ability to work efficiently under pressure while maintaining high standards of design quality.
•Ability to manage multiple priorities and coordinate across disciplines in a fast-paced project environment.
•Experience working on capital projects involving process equipment is an asset.
The chosen candidate will also be required to provide an original Criminal Record Check that is satisfactory to SRC prior to the commencement of any employment duties. The Criminal Record Check must have been executed within the preceding 30 days of receipt.
This position is located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
