JOB TITLE: Piping Design Lead
NorthStar Energy Services is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Lead Designer to join the Professional Engineering Consulting team located in Arlington or Houston, Texas. The successful candidate will work alongside an experienced team of designers and professional engineers who specialize in Energy Projects.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Piping Design Lead will be responsible for leading the design group and manage deliverables of concurrent projects from concept design through to the successful completion of various drawing issuances and submission of final project as-built drawings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
MANAGEMENT
•Lead a team of designers & drafters in the production of complex design discipline drawings based on engineered items such as steel and concrete calculations, sketches, tabulations, and material requisitions.
•Assist in maintaining project schedules as assigned by Department Supervisor, Project Managers, or Engineering Manager, as well as other tasks associated with client deliverables.
•Ensure that internal squad checks are performed accurately and in a timely manner by the design department.
•Provide input on developing and maintaining the department procedures and standards.
•Lead other discipline designers in following department procedures and standards.
•Provide regular updates to Department Supervisor and Project Managers on project status and addressing any concerns.
•Keep track of latest revisions of engineered items by maintaining strict organizational habits.
•Assist in constructability reviews throughout the project. This would include front-end reviews of equipment layouts, accessibility, and maintenance concerns.
•Act as a mentor for subordinate designers.
•Identify potential risks and implement strategies to minimize errors and mistakes.
•Escalate potential issues to Department Supervisor when necessary.
•Interdepartmental Communication:
•Foster teamwork with designers and engineers in other departments to maintain proper continuity between the different disciplines as it pertains to drawing package development.
•Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation.
•Track project performance using appropriate tools and techniques.
•Training new and existing team members within discipline Design Department
•Assist Department Supervisor in developing and maintaining CAD libraries, internal standards and ensure proper design rules, client standards, and industry ‘best practices’ are followed on all project drawings.
•Responsible for knowing the client's project standards and ensuring the standards are being followed by the discipline design team.
Drafting:
•Department Lead will be tasked with running projects at times by fulfilling design and drafting duties when required.
DELIVERABLE MANAGEMENT
•Research, review, and application of Company Standards, Municipality Requirements, and Regulatory Codes
•Perform independent QA/QC of drawing deliverables.
•Verify structural and site-development layout meets project design intent.
•Support Professional Engineers during project design phase (standards review, gather calculation inputs, and other engineering activities) as needed.
•Coordinate and communicate project-specific deliverables with team members of all disciplines.
•Review of other discipline drawings to ensure drawings are properly illustrated.
•Perform field related work to obtain design information and verify designs for tie-ins as needed.
•Review and respond to RFI’s throughout project-life.
•Review of third-party vendor drawings to ensure compatibility with intended design.
QUALIFICATIONS:
GENERAL
•US citizen or Permanent Resident Card holder
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
•Associates or Bachelors’ degree in Technology, Computer Science, or Engineering
•In lieu of degree, 7 years of related design experience.
•Minimum 5 years of experience in the midstream energy or petrochemical sector.
