Controls Engineer assures safe, optimal and continuous operation of the electrical, automation and network systems in the surface and underground areas of the mine.
- Develops, designs, programs, simulates and tests, troubleshoots, and assists start-up on electrical systems of the mine. Is responsible for monitoring automation systems, design, testing and fine tuning PLC logic, designing HMI’s and automation network schemes. Defines and implements new control strategies over the electrical/automation/drives systems to improve performance and safety.
- Provides 24/7 support on all electrical/automation/drive systems. Assists in troubleshooting, repair and modification of systems to optimize production, safety and reduce downtime.
- Oversees estimating, quoting and purchasing of appropriate items (electrical/automation/drives) to assure projects are completed fulfilling the engineering standards on a timely manner and within budget. Makes panel designs and layouts, bill of materials, and wiring and network schematic drawings.
- Works actively with vendors, manufacturers and OEM’s to ensure that the needs of the mine are met. The Controls Engineer researches and reviews new products to keep the mine on the forward end of technological advances.
- Trains operation and maintenance personnel on safe and productive operation of electrical/automation systems. He/she helps train maintenance personnel in effective troubleshooting methods, technical skills and installation procedures.

- High School Diploma/GED
- Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Automation/Instrumentation, Industrial Maintenance
- MSHA 32-hour new miner training
- MSHA 8-hour site specific training
- MSHA underground and surface electrical card
- 3-5 years experience in the electrical field, with working knowledge of both distribution and power systems
- Knowledge of MSHA rules and regulations and National Electrical Code
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Controls Engineering preferred
- Preferred experience with Rockwell/Allen-Bradley equipment
- Preferred experience with Hirschmann switches
- Preferred experience with SEL software and devices
- Walking and standing and seating at desk for extended periods of time.
- Lifting, bending and stooping occasionally.
- Ability to lift above shoulder and/or carry over 100 pounds.
- Ability to push and/or pull over 100 pounds.
- Ability to carry on conversations (speaking and hearing) for extended periods of time.
- Ability to safely operate around moving equipment and hazardous situations.
- Frequent walking on uneven surfaces.
- Ability to work well under extreme weather conditions (cold, and heat).
- Ability to wear safety equipment such as respirators, hearing /eye protection, steel toed boots, and hardhats.
- Ability to see clearly objects in near/far surroundings.
