NSB Omega is searching for a Commissioning and Start-up Power Engineer for our MAJOR Oil & Gas Client in St. John's, NL.
Assignment DescriptionDescription: The Commissioning and Start-up Power Engineer is a key role within the offshore commissioning team, responsible for supporting the safe start-up, energization, and operation of all systems on the platform. This position suits an experienced Power Engineer and Senior Operator with a strong background in commissioning of utility and process systems on oil and gas facilities. You will be directly involved in preparing, starting up, and stabilizing the platform's utility and process systems as part of the commissioning and early operations team.
Responsibilities:
•Support and execute the commissioning and start-up of diesel and gas turbine generators, utility systems, chemical / process systems and backup/emergency power systems.
•Assist with energization planning and safe transitions from temporary to permanent power systems, including generator synchronization and load transfer.
•Perform hands-on fieldwork including system checks, isolation verification, line-up of equipment, and monitoring during system energization.
•Operate systems under commissioning control as per procedures and instructions from CSU leadership.
•Support process, utility, and power system commissioning activities from a control room and field operations standpoint.
•Monitor system parameters during start-up to ensure stability and identify abnormalities.
•Participate in job hazard assessments, lockout/tagout processes, and safety walks related to commissioning activities.
•Work closely with commissioning leads, construction, vendors, and the Operations team to align on system readiness and punch list closeout.
•Provide input on commissioning plans, risk assessments, and system line-ups based on operational experience.
Deliverables:
•Completed commissioning work packs, check sheets, and ITRs for sub systems.
•Participation in the preparation and execution of energization and isolation plans.
•Daily field logs, shift handover notes, and commissioning reports related to your systems.
•Contribution to safe work planning and job hazard analysis (JHA) for live system work.
•Operator input during system walkdowns, punch list creation, and deficiency close-out.
•Support for transition-to-operations documentation and lessons learned.
Qualifications:
•3rd Class Power Engineering Certificate (minimum), with preference for 2nd Class or higher.
•Minimum 7–10 years of experience in power generation and operations in the oil and gas industry, with preference for offshore experience.
•10 years + in direct Commissioning and Start up Experience
•Commissioning and start-up experience on offshore platforms, FPSOs, or heavy industrial installations (e.g., SAGD, refinery, LNG).
•Current offshore certifications is preferred (e.g., BOSIET, H2S Alive, CSTS, WHMIS, Confined Space, Fall Protection)
•Ability to work 12-hour shifts in a remote offshore rotational environment.
•Familiar with completion systems (Smart Completions) is an asset.
Competencies:
•Strong understanding of power generation systems (diesel and gas turbines), load management
•Strong understanding of utility and process systems.
•Solid field knowledge of high- and low-voltage electrical systems and their safe operation during commissioning.
•Familiarity with offshore operations, utility systems, and control room monitoring during start up phases.
