About Controls Engineering and being a Co-Op at Colonial Pipeline Company

A Controls Engineer performs and oversees the design, testing, implementation, and troubleshooting of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and low-voltage electrical cabinets and circuits. The PLCs and HMIs that Controls Engineers support monitor the status of inputs such as pressures, temperatures, flow rates, tank levels, pump status, valve status, and other factors from sensor devices and use that information to automatically react, or to alert someone to act, depending on the severity of the consequences or the complexity of the situation. Controls Engineers work as part of a project team to design changes to electrical wiring and make improvements to PLC / HMI programs based on the needs of various groups throughout the business (Operations, Engineering, Compliance, Safety, Measurement, Cybersecurity, and more). These improvements can increase reliability, allow for easier operation of the pipeline, increase response time to abnormal conditions, and increase the safety of certain processes/pieces of equipment. Controls Engineer generates documents throughout the project using standard templates for future reference and adherence to company standards and common code. Controls engineers also perform critical testing and implementation planning due to the operational risks associated with a large pipeline system with 24/7/365 operations.
