Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the AutoCAD Designer manages multiple projects, reviewing project requirements for the preparation of submittal drawings for custom miscellaneous metal products. The work involves the review of project plans and specifications, preparation of detailed drawings for customers, production and vendors.
The AutoCAD Designer works closely with the sales, engineering, purchasing and the production team on a daily basis to facilitate the flow of information and product to best serve the needs of the customer and Company.
Aluminum and stainless steel access hatches, ladders, platforms, railings, and manhole steps are the Company’s core products.

- Review tender documents and prepare shop drawings in AutoCAD to be included in the submittal package
- Consult with clients and consultants to discuss project requirements
- Create miscellaneous metal models from drawings and sketches
- Note any discrepancies between the sales order and tender package and bring these to the attention of the sales staff and/or production manager for resolution
- Work with purchasing to determine material availability and vendor capabilities
- Generate fabrication drawings to be issued to the shop floor
- Manage multiple projects in a fast paced environment
- Produce part and assembly drawings for suppliers
- Contribute to building internal library of products, parts and extrusions
- Work closely with welders and shop floor personnel, answering questions and explaining design details
- Represent MSU, with customers, consultants, contractors and suppliers
- 5 years drafting and modelling experience
- Strong knowledge of modelling and drafting concepts in AutoCAD. Working knowledge and experience with Inventor would be an asset.
- Knowledge of metal fabrication processes and/or metal detailing
- Ability to read plans and specifications
- Detail oriented and highly organized
- Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced team environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong work ethic with sense of responsibility, ownership and accountability and ability to meet assigned deadlines
- Solid math and measurement skills (i.e. conversion from fractional to decimal and metric to imperial)
- Experience in metal and custom manufacturing facilities
- Knowledge of provincial standards, building code requirements, load ratings and/or metal fabrication practices
- A Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Design and Drafting Technology would be an asset
