The Analytical Chemist provides technical support to the laboratory team, developing the equipment, processes, and procedures used by the technicians in order to test product in support of Materion's requirements for customers and the ISO 17025, NADCAP and AS9100 management systems. The Analytical Chemist reports to the Quality Labs Supervisor.
- Develop, validate, and continuously improve the analytical equipment, test methods, and practices used in the lab to generate high quality and timely test results.
- Maintain open and active communication with managers, reports, and other functions regarding workflow, issues, and opportunities for improvement.
- Work with equipment OEMs and Materion personnel to provide technical support in relation to equipment, test methods, and practices. Examples include the selection, installation, maintenance, and method development for any equipment used in the lab.
- Responsible for planning and selecting tests required on material, and for documenting the test methods and practices for use by the laboratory staff.
- Author technical reports, project updates, and technical overviews on a regular basis, possibly including papers and patent applications as opportunities arise. Participate in improvement projects and problem-solving teams.
- Perform as an information/ training resource to other lab staff, other Materion employees, and customers with regards to analytic capabilities and testing methodology.
- Provide effective training to other lab personnel on use of analytical equipment and systems.
- When performing some tests (e.g. fire assay), use of high temperature safety items such as heat shields, furnace gloves, and heat reflective safety clothing are a requirement. Due to the nature of the work, heat tolerance is required.
- Proficient in the use of computers, standard office software and systems (e.g. LIMS, SAP), and the ability to perform data entry accurately and quickly with no errors or transpositions.
- Ensure and facilitate that all accreditation as maintained and/ or implemented.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a four-year degree (preferably in physics, chemistry, or engineering).
- High school diploma, technical school, or GED required at a minimum, coupled with 10 or more years of relevant analytical experience.
- Mass Spectroscopy experience is preferred.
- The individual must be able to perform mathematical equations relevant to advanced Chemistry.
- Sound decision making skills are a pre-requisite, the individual must be able to take decisive action based on limited input and also determine when a decision requires supervisory input.
- Requires the ability to operate a computer which will include Microsoft Office, Mini-Tab, SAP.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to low concentrations of fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. All such exposures are customarily within limits established by federal and state regulatory bodies. The noise level in the work environment is usually low. Use of PPE is required to perform certain job functions.
The selection of the person to be hired for this position is contingent on the candidate having export compliance eligibility for access to U.S. controlled technology which comes under the licensing jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of State, International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the U.S. Department of Commerce, Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
The candidate selected will have to qualify as either a U.S. citizen, a U.S. National, a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., a Person Admitted into the U.S. as an Asylee or Refugee., a National of a country that is not prohibited from having access to U.S. controlled technology (via a letter of assurance), or a Person to be approved for an export license by the governing agency whose technology comes under its jurisdiction.
