Job Description AltaGas - Manager, Indigenous & Community Relations
Reporting to the Director, Indigenous and Community Relations, the
Manager, Indigenous & Community Relationswill serve to build and leverage AltaGas reputation in Northeast British Columbia and Alberta with focus on AltaGas’ Midstream business and will work to have a positive impact on the local and Indigenous communities. The role will also provide support on communications and with integrating non-technical risks into project development opportunities. The successful candidate is required to have well-developed human relation and communication skills necessary to inform, collaborate and influence various audiences such as the public, local officials, and Indigenous communities.
This role provides critical leadership and innovation for the continuous enhancement of the Indigenous Relations Program, including corporate guidance on emerging issues in a complex and evolving legal, regulatory and social context. Being results-driven with a focus on advancing inclusion of Indigenous interests on AltaGas’ activities, the role oversees the implementation of engagement strategies and plans that seek to maximize Indigenous participation in meaningful ways. This position is based in Calgary, AB but the ability to travel regularly throughout the region is an essential requirement of this position.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and sustain positive and productive working relationships with regional stakeholders, Indigenous Groups, community leaders, environmental organizations, and other community members with an interest in AltaGas’ assets and business.
- Provide leadership and innovation for the continuous enhancement and implementation of the Indigenous Relations Program and processes in order to deliver sustainable and responsible business results.
- Lead, mentor and continue building a high performing team of technical experts and professionals to provide timely, coordinated and innovative support to Midstream business.
- Responsible for the completion of accurate regulatory filings for Indigenous & Community Relations in compliance with provincial, federal and local regulatory requirements.
- Monitor AltaGas’ engagement and honouring commitments made with Indigenous groups; grows trust in and expands the long-term relationships established by AltaGas
- Lead negotiations and implementation of agreements between AltaGas and Indigenous groups, including employment and training commitments.
- Build a visible and meaningful presence for AltaGas within key communities by coordinating company participation in key events and recommending community investment opportunities.
- Proactively develop and maintain strong working relationships with key government and industry contacts.
- Communicate the opportunities, challenges, trends, issues and risks that could have a material impact on AltaGas’ Midstream business through stakeholder and Indigenous engagement and monitoring.
- Work closely with facility operations and project teams to understand existing and new development opportunities and collaborate on development and implementation of Indigenous participation plans, including contracting and employment, education and training.
- Collaborate with Supply Chain Management to maximize Indigenous participation opportunities on AltaGas activities.
- Gather intelligence and monitor trends in energy, energy transition and environmental issues, provincially and federally and assisting with development of position statements, briefing notes and other policy-related content, to facilitate the understanding of key policy developments within AltaGas.
- Prepare reports for the corporate audience as well as briefing notes for senior management to provide direction, guidance and support on issues that may impact AltaGas’ operations and project developments.
- Support the coordination of AltaGas’ Community Partnership Programs focused on Indigenous workforce development and rail safety.
- Coordinate, support and represent AltaGas, when required, in various industry, government committee and external events
- Bachelor's Degree in policy, law, public relations, marketing, communications, or journalism or the equivalent preferred
- 7+ years of experience in government, industry, policy, media relations, public relations or stakeholder and Indigenous relations required- Ability to travel regularly within Alberta and BC required.
- Experience with/knowledge of regulatory requirements governing the development and operation of AltaGas’ activities in the areas of assignment.
- Experience and existing relationships with community members and elected officials in Northeast BC and Alberta is an asset
- Excellent communication skills (active listening, public speaking, verbal, and written), along with ability to interface with internal and external parties
- Experience in and familiarity with the energy sector
- Proficient use of MS Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, Publisher, Word)
- Proactively develops and maintains strong working relationships with Indigenous, community, industry, and key government contacts
- Demonstrates flexibility and an ability to respond easily to shifting priorities
- Operates with a high level of integrity, confidentially, and accountability
- Ability to work independently in an entrepreneurial environment, as well as ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to manage projects from conception to completion, with limited oversight
- Able to work to tight timeframes and is highly organized
- Eligible to lobby at both Provincial and Federal levels in Canada
