The Wood Processor Operator is responsible for operating specialized machinery to efficiently cut and process logs to required specifications. This role involves ensuring safety, maintaining equipment, and meeting production goals while minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency.
The Wood Processor Operator will report directly to the Plant Operations Manager.
o Operate wood processing equipment (e.g., harvesters, log processors, or sawmills) to cut and trim logs.
o Set machine controls to ensure logs meet precise size and shape specifications.
o Measure, cut, and trim felled trees into specified log lengths or sections based on operational needs or customer specifications.
o Remove limbs, branches, and other debris as necessary.
o Perform regular inspections and basic maintenance on machinery.
o Troubleshoot and report mechanical issues to maintenance teams.
o Monitor production to meet output targets and minimize downtime.
o Optimize processes to reduce waste and improve material yield.
o Log production data, maintenance schedules, and incidents accurately.
o Communicate updates to supervisors and team members.
o Follow all workplace safety guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, gloves, and safety boots.
o Conduct regular safety inspections of tools and worksite to prevent accidents.
o Work closely with other firewood team members, including fallers, skidder operators, and loaders, to ensure smooth operations.
o Communicate effectively to coordinate activities and prioritize tasks.
o Adhere to environmental and sustainability practices by minimizing waste and avoiding damage to surrounding trees or habitats.
o In this role you will be expected to show up on time every day, operate a variety of different equipment, have a good attitude, and be a motivated employee.
o You will be cross-trained in various other roles and activities within the firewood division and are expected to take on other tasks as required.
· Previous experience in forestry, sawmills, or related industries preferred.
· Mechanical aptitude for minor repairs and adjustments.
· Attention to detail and the ability to interpret technical specifications.
· Familiarity with log grading, tree species, and cutting techniques is an advantage.
· Mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot minor issues with equipment.
· Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, such as lifting heavy objects (branches, logs), standing for long periods, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
· Strong commitment to safety. Strong understanding of safety procedures related to tree care and equipment operation.
· Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
· Ability to quickly identify and solve issues related to job site safety, equipment, and workflow.
· Valid driver’s license and ability to drive company vehicles or trucks is a plus, but not required. Possession of a commercial driver's license (CDL) is preferred but not required.
· Excellent interpersonal skills and team orientation with a high level of professionalism.
· Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
· Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
· Outdoor work in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
· Regularly lifting heavy objects (up to 50-100 pounds), bending, climbing, and operating power equipment.
· The position involves working in close proximity to dangerous machinery, falling branches, and heights. Safety measures must be adhered to at all times.
