Performs semi-skilled winding and related work and performs and/or assists qualified winders with inspecting, repairing, rebuilding, and assembly of equipment sent to the Central Machine Shop (small & large motors, transformers, exciters and generators found in AEP power plants) and performs the same at other places of temporary assignments.
1.) Performs duties including operation of all motor shop tools to perform work such as burning out windings from stators, spray painting, steam cleaning, etc. 'strips coils from motors and prepares for dipping or "vpi" operations.
2.) Tapes jumper and series connections on motor stators, field connections on DC field frames and formed coils.
3.) Disassembles and assembles DC motors up to and including 10hp and AC motors having one-piece end bells without sleeve bearings. Manufactures random wound coils and rewinds motors having four to eight poles.
5.) Manufactures support blocking, wedges and other necessary items required in the rewinding of motors and generators.
6.) Operates as required all bridge cranes, hoists, fork trucks, etc., assigned to the shop.
7.) Performs maintenance work on the Central Machine Shop building and equipment.
8.) Assists, as directed, employees of equal or higher classification in carrying through work? assignments.
9.) Performs all work in accordance with safety regulations and acceptable shop processes and practices.
11.) Reports irregularities or abnormal conditions. Takes notes and keeps records as directed.
12.) Interfaces with outside resources assigned to assist in the work.
13.) Performs similar or less skilled work, as assigned and is willing to learn new skills as shop support grows to meet the needs of customers such as general disassembly of ID fans, cleaning fan components, assisting with the re-assembly of ID fan components and assisting with taking and documenting QC information.
Education requirements are listed below: High School Diploma, GED, or a combination of education and/or experience.

The required Pre Employment tests are listed below:
EEIMASS - Plant Maintenance Sel Sys Physical demand level is Medium Third class winders must demonstrate the skills and abilities contained within the job description or satisfactory progression toward these skills and abilities prior to the end of the probationary period; and also demonstrate the skills and ability required for promotion to second class within one year from the initial hiring date.
Satisfactorily perform all of the demonstrations listed below:
1. Tape a motor series and jumper connection as per the Standard Practices.
2. Demonstrate the proper method of removing an antifriction bearing from a shaft and for reinstalling it.
3. Wind a group of coils using the information from a motor data card on the quick release and round nose winding heads.
4. Remove insulating varnish from a stator core area, end bell fits, and tap out the bolt holes.
5. Distinguish the difference, by sight, between an AC and DC motor.
6. Demonstrate the proper use of a volt-ohm meter. Successful completion of the Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test is required for this position. The Physical Demand Level for this job is: M – Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
