The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a

Tailings & Dams Manager – VNL

to join our

Technical Services

team in St. John’s, NL. This position is on a Monday to Friday schedule based in the St. John’s office, with travel to the Long Harbour Operations site and the Voisey’s Bay Mine site as required.

This is an

18-month fixed term position

. Relocation to St. John’s, NL is required for this role.

As the Tailings & Dams Manager for Vale Newfoundland and Labrador (VNL), you will ensure the integrity of the tailings facilities by performing the scope of work for key aspects of tailings and pond management, with a focus in process safety for the operation, surveillance, ongoing construction & maintenance. This is done in conjunction with the Engineer of Record (EoR) and other internal teams and while providing regular updates to the Accountable Executive.

Additionally, in this position you will:

- Act as Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE) for Long Harbour and Voisey’s Bay Sites.

- Act as control owner for critical controls associated with facility risk assessments.

- Prioritize tasks to progress and close action plans from DSIs, DSRs, ITRB meetings, MAC TSM and GISTM audits.

- Manage the regional Tailings and Dams team, providing development opportunities and necessary training for the team members and members of the supporting operations teams.

- Act as the qualified person for water management on both sites. Lead the Site Water Management Committee, Progress water management projects and provide update to the Integrated Water Management Team.

- Prepare for and participate in routine management update meetings as required.

About You

Education:

- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Civil, Geotechnical, Environmental).

- Master’s Degree is preferred, with a specialization in Geotechnical engineering.

- Professional Engineering designation (P. Eng.) is required.

Experience:

- A minimum of 11 years of geotechnical and tailings experience, including:

- Tailings storage facility design, construction, operations, closure of tailings and water storage facilities, and combined leadership experience.

- Geotechnical engineering for tailings facilities, water storage facilities and slope management, including dam analysis, tailings characterization and instrumentation technologies.

Skills:

- Ability to influence senior business leaders and to manage teams of employees and contractors.

- Knowledge of different mineral, tailings and water processing and handling technologies.

- Expertise in managing tailings storage facility governance (deep knowledge of MAC, CDA, GISTM, ICOLD, other guidance documents).

- Ability to lead teams focused on dam safety and guide others in the application of critical thinking.

- Ability to collaborate within multi-disciplinary project teams for the delivery of construction projects.

- Must be able to build and maintain relationships with other teams in the organization and externally.
