Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Structural Steel Estimator to join our team. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of union labor practices and strong proficiency using Strumis, Autodesk Takeoff, or similar industry-specific estimating tools. This role plays a critical part in preparing accurate, competitive, and complete bids for public works and commercial structural and miscellaneous steel projects. You will coordinate with project stakeholders to ensure labor costs, fabrication hours, and field erection components reflect actual union productivity rates and compliance with prevailing wage requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
•Review architectural and structural plans, specifications, and addenda to determine project scope.
•Identify union labor classifications, trade jurisdictions, and compliance requirements for each bid.
•Digital Estimating & Takeoff:
•Perform digital takeoffs using Autodesk Takeoff or comparable 2D/3D software.
•Input takeoff data and generate material lists directly into Strumis Estimating Module to maintain an integrated workflow from bid through fabrication.
•Accurately calculate labor units using union trade-specific productivity rates.
•Factor in shop vs. field work, welding types, connection complexity, and rigging logistics.
•Prepare detailed estimates, including material costs, shop fabrication hours, field erection hours, submittals, coatings, trucking, mobilization, and permits.
•Develop bid clarifications, inclusions/exclusions, and scope narratives.
•Solicit vendor quotes for materials (steel shapes, plate, bolts, embeds), coatings (galvanizing, paint), and subcontract services.
•Analyze vendor proposals for completeness and compatibility with project specs.
•Coordinate with detailers, production, and erection teams to validate constructability, sequencing, and job site constraints.
•Collaborate with accounting or finance to ensure prevailing wage and union reporting are integrated into project costs.
•Maintain accurate historical cost data and labor units in Strumis.
•Participate in post-bid reviews to refine estimating accuracy and job performance forecasting.
Qualifications:
•3–5 years of structural steel estimating experience with union labor scope.
•Advanced proficiency with Strumis, Autodesk Takeoff, Bluebeam, and /or MS Excel.
•Strong knowledge of steel erection sequencing, fabrication workflow, and union labor classifications.
•Ability to interpret complex construction documents, including specifications, schedules, and addenda.
•Familiarity with prevailing wage, certified payroll, and public works compliance (California DIR preferred).
•Prior field experience in fabrication or erection.
•Knowledge of AISC and AWS D1.1 standards.
•Experience with public bidding platforms (e.g., PlanetBids, BuildingConnected, or DIR CA).

•Office-based work with occasional visits to fabrication shops or job sites.
•Must be comfortable managing deadlines and multiple bid packages simultaneously.
