Staff Thermal Engineer

Plays a leading role in the architecture, design, validation, of Generac’s clean energy products, with emphasis on design and validation of innovative thermal solutions.

- Architecting, designing, modeling, and validating thermal solutions in ESS/power electronics

- Building CFD models and instrumented thermal test vehicles to validate models

- Creating innovative product enabling thermal solutions that balance form and function

- Optimizing thermal solutions for performance, DFM/DFA, size, acoustics, reliability, cost

- Providing clear and actionable guidance to engineering teams for detailed design

- Sizing and selecting components for passive, air, liquid, and 2-phase thermal solutions

- Interfacing with thermal suppliers for component selection, validation, and integration

- Partnering with validation & reliability teams to define thermal test parameters

- Partnering with SW/FW to provide thermal policies for control algorithms

Minimum Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field

- Minimum 7 years of hands-on thermal design / electronics cooling experience

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

- Expert knowledge of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics

- Expertise modeling passive-cooling, air cooling, liquid cooling, 2-phase, batteries, solar radiation

- Expertise in sizing and selection of fans, radiators, heat sinks, heat pipes, etc.

- Experience with instrumentation and data acquisition methods for thermal validation

- Expert proficiency with Ansys, Flotherm, or Star CCM (or other leading CFD packages)

Preferred Qualifications:

- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field specializing in heat transfer

- Demonstrated record bringing high-quality products from development into production

- Experience in thermal solutions for outdoor NEMA/IP rated products

- Experience with validation testing, product reliability, and failure analysis

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

- Proficiency with 3D CAD (Solidworks preferred, other accepted)

- Experience designing thermal solutions for battery energy storage systems

- Experience modeling battery pack failure modes including outgassing & propagation

- Experience with UL 9540A regulatory requirements and testing

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
