Centrus Energy is seeking a Sr. Electrical Design Engineer with expertise in medium- and low-voltage switchgear, controlgear, and electrical protection systems. The role centers on working with third-party contractors to size and select power-distribution and motor-control equipment that supports advanced gas-centrifuge enrichment and other process-control applications. You will serve as an electrical-protection authority, leading projects with minimal supervision and ensuring all work meets operational, regulatory, and safety objectives from initial concept through commissioning.
- Lead the design, specification, and layout of switchgear, motor‑control centers (MCCs), protective‑relay schemes, and associated controlgear for facility power systems (480 V through 13.8 kV).
- Define and develop relay settings and protection philosophies (overcurrent, differential, undervoltage, arc-flash mitigation).
- Perform short-circuit, coordination, load-flow, and arc-flash studies using ETAP or equivalent tools.
- Specify and evaluate circuit breakers, contactors, drives, transformers, UPS systems, grounding and lightning-protection components, and ancillary controls to ensure conformance with engineering requirements and performance specifications.
- Prepare and review single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, interlock logic, bills of material, and construction packages; red-line and approve drawings to meet UL 508A/1558/891, IEEE C37, NEC, NFPA 70E, and regulatory requirements.
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases of electrical work for major projects or entire projects of moderate scope; develop cost estimates, equipment lists, and statements of work.
- Participate in hazard analyses, design reviews, and regulatory audits (DOE, NRC); champion arc-flash-safety and lock-out/tag-out practices.
- Produce technical reports, literature reviews, and progress updates; present findings and status briefings to stakeholders and senior management.
- Perform additional related tasks as assigned. We'd Love to Hear from Candidates with:
- Five or more (5+) years in electrical design engineering with a primary focus on switchgear, motor-control, or power-system protection in highly regulated or process-driven industries (nuclear, chemical, oil & gas, large manufacturing).
- Experience in protection-system modelling, relay setting/coordination, and arc-flash hazard calculations using ETAP, SKM Power Tools, EasyPower, or similar analysis platforms.
- Specification of LV/MV switchgear and controlgear per relevant ANSI, IEEE, UL, and NEC standards.
- Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, NESC, OSHA, and DOE electrical-safety directives.
- Familiarity with SCADA, PLC, or DCS interfaces for breaker status, sequence-of-events, and remote-operating functions.
- Proven history of analytical, problem-solving, and project-management skills; effective oral and written communication; collaborative mindset when working with cross-functional teams.
- Prior exposure to DOE or NRC nuclear-quality requirements, NQA-1, and Configuration Management processes is desirable.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or a related field) from an accredited institution – or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) licensure and/or certifications in project management or quality are advantageous but not required.
- Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP), IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop participation, or similar credentials are a plus.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
