In March 2022 Kinross acquired Great Bear Resources and its flagship Great Bear project (GBR), located near Red Lake, Ontario. The Great Bear property is a greenfield, large-scale deposit with the potential for significant open pit and underground operations. At the start of 2025, the project is moving into the detailed engineering and major equipment procurement phase. The Preliminary Economic Assessment released in September 2024 indicated a total initial project capital of $1.4B.
The Senior Cost Estimator will be responsible for all aspects of estimating activities for GBR, including leading the development and compilation of an updated Capital Cost estimate according to industry standard practices. The incumbent will report to the Cost Control and Contract Administration Manager and will work closely with the GBR team and GBR engineering consultants. This role can be based in Toronto or remote with occasional travel to Toronto and is initially a one-year contract. There may be a need for an ongoing cost estimating role during the future Construction Phase, and if so, the role would be on rotation to the project site in Red Lake, Ontario.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the project scope, budget and schedule, and Kinross estimating standards
- Review and refine the GBR estimating plan, ensuring clear roles and responsibilities
- Review engineering consultant estimating plans, ensuring alignment with the overall plan
- Work with engineering consultants to ensure their estimating deliverables and inputs are delivered on time, at the required quality and in the proper formats
- Review inputs from construction contractors for quality, completeness and consistency
- Lead the development and compilation of project wide estimate factors (productivity, labour rates, etc.) and distribute to engineering consultants and others for use as required
- Lead the preparation of the construction indirect and owner’s cost components of the estimate, ensuring appropriate back up and documentation
- Participate in and provide input to budgetary RFP processes
- Support the identification of cost saving & cost optimization opportunities
- Compile all estimate details from various sources, ensuring appropriate quality control and review over inputs and outputs
- Prepare cost reconciliation and variance analysis against the previous Capex estimate
- In collaboration with engineering consultants and construction contractors who are providing inputs to the estimate, prepare cost benchmarks to assist in validating estimate details
- Coordinate the overall Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) process, using specialized resource support as required, to calculate contingency
- Prepare the overall Basis of Estimate document, incorporating input from other contributors, ensuring consistency in level of detail and tone across the document
- Maintain the capex trend log
- As required, provide estimating support for on-going work (Advanced Exploration construction activities) including reviewing trends and contractor change requests

- Business, Engineering or Engineering Technician diploma or degree, or equivalent
- 10 years of project cost control experience and/or estimating experience in various project phases (engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover to Operations)
- EPC/EPCM, Owner’s project team and/or mining industry experience
- Excellent working knowledge of Project, engineering and construction estimating techniques and standard industry estimating practices
- Strong computer skills, including extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office and cost control software
- Excellent organizational skills
- Strong attention to detail and ability to set priorities
- Able to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Able to build and maintain productive working relationships, and work in a collaborative manner
- Able to quickly and effectively analyze information, and identify trends and anomalies
- Good writing and presentation skills
