Reporting to the Vice-President Environment and Community Relations, this position will provide advice, guidance and expertise in the area of Aboriginal affairs. He/she will establish and build mutually productive relationships with local First Nations communities to identify and manage social risks, and positively influence Gold Fields Windfall’s reputation and image. Strategic alignment, negotiations and implementation of agreements will be key elements of this position’s responsibility. Based in the Montreal office, he/she will work a 5-day schedule followed by 2 days off.


Duties and responsibilities

- Lead the development of a First Nations Strategic Plan, including producing a socio-economic background of host communities and historical profile of land use in the areas where Gold Fields holds mining titles ;

- Participate in the negotiations of agreements with various groups including the Cree, Anishnabeg and Attikwamek First Nations for Windfall and the other exploration projects of the company ;

- Develop the implementation strategy and ensure the adequate transfer to the community relations team once agreements are signed ;

- Track the realization of the obligations associated with the currently signed agreements and report on their progress to the leadership ;

- Work closely with the community relations group to ensure consistency with local initiatives and social commitments ;

- Follow recent legal developments and jurisprudence associated with Aboriginal cases in both the courts of Québec and Canada ;

- Participate in social due diligence work, when needed, of existing joint ventures or of future acquisitions ;

- Participate in ad hoc activities, meetings and functions, including outside working hours whilst traveling to the host communities of the various Gold Fields’ projects ;

- Work with the other global heritage team members to support in growing the community of practice ;

- Report any situation that could affect the occupational health and safety of staff and the physical integrity of the facilities ;

- Comply at all times with health, safety and environmental policies and regulations ;

- Prepare and draft various correspondence, weekly, monthly and annual reports for management and head office ;

- Perform any other tasks related to the Cultural heritage spécialist that are relevant to the success of the project.


Qualifications required

- Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, political science, social sciences or similar (or equivalent experience) ;

- Minimum 7 years experience in the field, ideally in a mining or exploration company ;

- Bilingualism will be required to work often in English ;

- Regular travel to support relationship and reputation management ;


- Valid class 5 driver’s license.


Technical skills

- Knowledge of stakeholder management systems and grievance mechanisms ;

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and establish credibility with diverse stakeholders ;

- Skillfully and quickly write content for external distribution ;


- Excellent knowledge of Office Suite software.
