Position Summary:
The Design Supervisor in the solar industry is responsible for leading the design team in developing accurate, code-compliant, and high-quality solar PV system designs for residential, commercial, or utility-scale projects. This role oversees the workflow of system designers and engineers, ensures alignment with project schedules and standards, and acts as a technical resource across cross-functional teams. The Design Supervisor also plays a key role in process improvement and innovation in solar system design practices.
Key Responsibilities:
•Supervise and manage the daily operations of the solar design team, including assigning tasks, reviewing work, and ensuring deadlines are met.
•Oversee the preparation of detailed PV system designs, including single-line diagrams, layout drawings, equipment selection, and interconnection plans.
•Ensure compliance with NEC, local building/electrical codes, utility requirements, and AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) regulations.
•Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers and engineers.
•Collaborate with sales, project management, engineering, and permitting teams to support accurate and timely project execution.
•Review and approve design packages before submission to permitting agencies or clients.
•Implement and maintain design standards, templates, and quality control processes.
•Stay informed on the latest solar technologies, design software, and industry best practices.
•Identify opportunities for process optimization and automation within the design workflow.
•Support training and onboarding of new team members.
Qualifications:
•3 years of experience in solar PV system design; prior supervisory or lead experience strongly preferred.
•NABCEP PV Installation Professional or NABCEP PV Design Specialist certification is a plus.
•Strong understanding of solar PV system design, equipment, and installation practices.
•Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Helioscope, PVsyst, Aurora Solar, or similar tools.
•Familiarity with permitting processes, interconnection requirements, and local code compliance.
•Excellent leadership and team management skills.
•Strong analytical, organizational, and communication abilities.
•Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Work Environment:
•Primarily office-based or hybrid depending on company policy.
•Occasional visits to job sites, client meetings, or permitting offices may be required.
•Collaborative, cross-functional team setting.
Physical Requirements:
•Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods.
•Occasionally lift design documents or equipment up to 20 lbs.
•Ability to navigate project sites if necessary.
