Senior Strategic Steel Buyer

Job Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and strategic Senior Buyer to join our procurement team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing the purchasing process, ensuring that materials and supplies are sourced efficiently and cost-effectively. This role requires a strong understanding of supply chain dynamics, inventory control, and the ability to negotiate contracts with suppliers. The Senior Buyer will play a crucial role in supporting production planning and logistics to meet organizational goals.

Responsibilities

Purchasing Strategy Execution: Work with Division 5 executive leadership and heads of purchasing to support the implementation of the long-term steel purchasing strategy, driving enterprise value, and positioning us to be the most competitive fabricator. Build deep industry knowledge and leverage a strong grasp of the steel supply chain to understand cost drivers and preemptively address sourcing challenges.

· Structural Steel Sourcing: Utilizing our Tekla ERP system and leveraging a data-driven negotiation approach, work directly with suppliers to secure and price-lock structural steel for each of our projects while balancing lowest total landed cost, on-time delivery, and quality.

· Project Material Margin Management: Ensure material is purchased at or below the estimated project material cost and manage changes to confirmed structural steel resulting from project redesigns. Evaluate change orders to provide the material cost impact and work with suppliers to minimize costs and maintain project margin without delays to project timelines.

· Sales and Estimating Support: Support the sales and estimating teams by using your market knowledge and relationships to provide a current and forward-looking direction on pricing across all commodities being sourced.

· Tracking and Reporting: Maintain our purchasing tracker to provide an overall and project-level view of purchasing efficiency for leadership and answer project specific questions regarding material pricing.

Skills

· 3-5 years of relevant work experience, preferably with purchasing, supply chain, or other relevant industry experience will be considered

· Degree in a business-related field, supply chain management, or equivalent

· Project based purchasing experience is a plus, but not required

· Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required, including the ability to build new models and analyses

· Strong analytical skills and a data-driven approach to problem solving with a focused attention to detail

· Exceptional interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate at all levels of the organization and challenge external suppliers with key pricing issues

· Results-oriented, highly motivated, and able to work in a constantly changing environment

· Possesses an entrepreneurial attitude and growth mindset

· Experience in Tekla software is a Plus
