The
Senior Market Fundamentals Specialistserves as ENMAX’s senior subject matter expert on Alberta’s Restructured Energy Market (REM), leveraging deep expertise in market design, congestion and transmission dynamics, and provincial and federal environmental policies to produce high-value forecasts and insights. This role, with direction from management, leads strategic initiatives, provides mentorship, and delivers enterprise-wide intelligence that shapes ENMAX’s long-term outlook and commercial strategy.
Major Responsibilities
- Lead the development and communication of long-term Alberta electricity market outlooks using PLEXOS, Aurora XMP or other production cost modeling platforms, ensuring robust forecasts that guide corporate strategy.
- Mentor and coach market specialists, providing guidance in analytical methodologies, market fundamentals, and best practices to build team capability.
- Serve as ENMAX’s subject matter expert on the Restructured Energy Market (REM) and Clean Electricity Regulations (CER), with expertise in congestion management, Financial Transmission Rights (FTRs), transmission dynamics, and provincial and federal environmental policy frameworks.
- Deliver timely and high-quality analyses by adapting scope and priorities to meet tight deadlines, ensuring decision-makers have actionable insights when needed most.
- Identify and quantify commercial and regulatory risks through comprehensive scenario and sensitivity analyses that inform trading, retail, generation, regulatory advocacy, and strategic planning.
- Build and defend ENMAX’s proprietary market views on supply-demand dynamics, price formation, and bidding behavior, aligning perspectives across trading, retail, strategy, and operations.
- Translate complex data and policy analysis into clear, executive-ready narratives that support the Board, senior leadership, and external stakeholders.
- Represent ENMAX in industry consultations, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory forums, providing thought leadership on Alberta market design and evolution.
- Oversee and continuously improve core forecasting and reporting processes, driving efficiency and innovation through automation and advanced modeling approaches.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives that integrate market fundamentals with broader business objectives, creating value across multiple business units including trading, retail, generation, regulatory, and commercial operations.
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Economics, Analytics, Computer Science, Finance, or related field (PhD or MBA an asset).
- 7–10 years of industry experience in competitive electricity markets.
- Comprehensive expertise in Alberta’s Restructured Energy Market (REM), with deep knowledge of congestion management, Financial Transmission Rights (FTRs), and evolving market design and compliance rules.
- Strong understanding of provincial and federal environmental and climate policy frameworks, including Clean Electricity Regulations (CER), GHG compliance, carbon pricing, and renewable energy credits (REC) markets.
- Expertise in Alberta electricity and natural gas markets, including dispatch control, unit bidding behavior, generation cost structures, and key supply-demand drivers.
- Advanced statistical and econometric modeling skills, with ability to forecast market outcomes, quantify sensitivities, and translate fundamentals into actionable commercial insights.
- Proficiency in production cost modeling and scenario analysis; strong skills in Python, SQL, and Excel/VBA (Databricks and Azure an asset).
- Strong background in financial and market analysis, including valuation, portfolio optimization, and risk assessment.
- Strong grasp of weather–supply/demand relationships and their impact on market volatility.
- Proven problem-solving, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills,
- Strong time and task/project tracking skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver under tight timelines.
- Self-starter, adaptive, detail-oriented, and tenacious with a keen interest in the energy market, a passion for data analytics, and a drive to innovate and grow.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate complex market and policy concepts to executives and stakeholders.

Location:
This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) workforce with office workspace located at ENMAX Place
(141 - 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB). You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
