Senior Engineer - Transmission Stations Engineering

What you'll do
The Stations Electrical Design Department is part of the Transmission Stations division in BC Hydro Engineering providing
design and technical services related to BC Hydro Substations. The projects are of varying complexity including equipment
replacement, upgrades and new additions to stations, new stations, and Owners Engineer review work.
This role requires demonstrated experience as an electrical engineer with the design of transmission utility substations with
operating voltages from 12kV to 500kV and experience working with utility design solutions in an electric utility environment.
The key accountabilities for the position are:
•As an experienced professional engineer, engages in the engineering of electrical utility electrical systems and develops
specialized expertise in design engineering.
•Analyze and resolve challenging and unusual engineering problems with considerable independence.
•Manage medium and large sized projects and work packages, write specifications and standards, estimate capital costs,
lead and mentor technical staff, and provide technical and site support during the installation and commissioning of
electrical equipment.
•Provide work leadership to a team in a lead engineer role including reporting out on work completion of the team.
•Provide technical direction to engineers, consultants and technical support staff, coordinate projects of medium to high
complexity and plan and manage resources and develop innovative methods of design for engineering problems.
•Review work of the project team and of consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results
and adherence to accepted engineering practice.
•Impart engineering knowledge and encourage the professional development of engineers.
•Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues in order to determine
relative priorities, assess the impact of work on others and resolve issues of concern.
•Senior engineers are expected to provide technical leadership in the Electrical design fields and to provide mentorship to
junior engineers and EITs.
What you bring
The successful candidate shall have:
•A degree in Electrical Engineering (preferably power engineering) recognized by Canadian universities.
•Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British
Columbia (EGBC).
•A minimum of 8 years of working experience in relevant engineering fields, with 6 years of experience in Station Design.
•Strong ability to communicate efficiently including verbal and technical writing in the English language, analytical,
interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
•Strong organizational skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
The successful candidate shall demonstrate:
•In depth technical knowledge in electrical design of transmission utility substations with operating voltages from 12kV to
500kV.
•In depth technical knowledge in general layout, grounding, lightning, lighting, power cables and station service power
supply system design.
•Technical knowledge in major electrical equipment such as transformers, capacitors, reactors, disconnect switches and
circuit breakers.
•Technical knowledge in the electrical, mechanical, civil, P&C and operating requirements of components used to build
such systems.
•A broad knowledge in power system planning, system operation, protection & control engineering, and project
management.
•Ability to investigate, analyze and solve a variety of engineering problems, many of which are of a challenging and
unusual nature.
•Ability to provide technical directions to junior engineers; to manage design tasks including scope, schedule and cost.
•Ability to manage client relationships to ensure their needs are met and to work closely with stakeholders to drive
innovation, find engineering solutions that add value and to reach consensus.
•Experience in project management including estimating, cost control and project administration.
•Demonstrated ability to coordinate and lead multiple projects and to plan and manage project resources is desirable.
•Demonstrated effectiveness in work leadership and providing technical direction to junior, intermediate and other senior
engineers and technical support is an asset.
•Experience with substations, BC Hydro standards, and other electrical standards including both national (CSA, ULC) and
international (IEEE, IEC, etc.) is an asset.
•Experience with design software for grounding studies, lightning studies, and bus design is an asset.
•Experience with outdoor construction and assembly of steel work is an asset.
•CAD skills, particularly with 3-D modeling, using Autodesk products such as AutoCAD, Inventor and Vault is an asset.
•Interest and ability to learn and develop technical expertise through on the job training and development.

What else you should know
•This is a hybrid work model where a minimum of two days a week will be in the Edmonds design offices with more
frequent office presence required if needed.
•Occasional travel for station site visits is required including travel to remote areas within the province. Depending on
location, some travel may require overnight stays or the use of small aircraft or boats.
•A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain your Driver's License: Class 5 in Good Standing.
•Applicants who do not meet the full qualifications or those with lesser work experience may be considered for a lower level
position.
