The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. Reporting to the Manager, Systems Projects, this role supports the execution of transmission developments identified in the AESO’s Long-Term Transmission Plan. The Systems Projects group is responsible for conducting engineering studies and developing and delivering system projects to ensure compliance with transmission planning standards.
As a Senior Engineer, you will play a key role in identifying solutions to system needs, conducting engineering analysis, and making project recommendations within the regulatory framework. You will also contribute to project leadership by leading technical studies, collaborating cross-functionally, and providing guidance and support to peers.

- Conduct power system analyses to evaluate system project alternatives and develop system projects to comply with Alberta Reliability Standards and ISO Rules.

- Production cost modeling and generator dispatch simulation
- Prepare and review engineering study reports and related documentation.
- Consult with transmission and distribution facility owners on system projects.
- Analyze economic data to determine system project economics.
- Represent the AESO in regulatory proceedings, interjurisdictional technical groups (e.g. WECC), and stakeholder engagements.
- Communicate the details of system projects to internal and external stakeholders.
- Develop software and automate processes using Python.
- Develop and implement system planning processes.
- Provide guidance and support to engineers in the System Projects and Grid Planning groups.
A combination of these experiences and qualities will support your success in this role:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering with a focus on electrical engineering.
- Registered with APEGA as a Professional Engineer or eligibility to register.
- 10 or more years of experience in the electric utilities industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with transmission planning, customer interconnection studies, grid operations, or simulation and modelling.
- Power flow studies and dynamic studies, especially using PSS/E.
- Articulate and concise written and verbal communications.
- Working with the Alberta regulatory framework for electricity.
- Engineering economics, including production cost modeling, market simulation, or cost estimating.
- Software development, especially engineering or scientific simulation software using Python.
- Mathematic modeling, especially optimization (e.g., OFP).
