Founded in 2002, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.
The NWMO has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders who are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. In 2024, the NWMO selected Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation (WLON)-Ignace area as the site for our Deep Geological Repository for used nuclear fuel.
This decision means our office and staff will, in the future, be relocating to Ignace, ON, and the DGR will be situated in the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area. Infrastructure planning and development is underway to support this transition and ensure that both the community and our employees are well-served and supported now and in the future.
Senior Engineer /Scientist/ Technical Officer

Job Summary:
The NWMO, is seeking Engineers with experience in the following areas to join our dynamic team of professionals. We are looking for applicants with background and past experience in technical disciplines of Electrical or Instrumentation and Control, Mechanical Piping Design, Fire Protection Engineering or Nuclear Systems Engineering or Nuclear Operations.
Reporting to the Manager, Engineering Programs, the successful candidate will excel as subject matter expert by providing advice, guidance and solutions in their designated technical discipline to support the implementation of a deep geological repository for Canada’s used nuclear fuel and other projects implemented by NWMO. When required, the candidate will also act as project manager for external contracts, defining and overseeing work scopes from start to contract closeout.
This role will interface with a skilled multi-discipline engineering team including industrial, nuclear, and mining sectors; safety assessment, geoscience, environmental, and regulatory affairs at the NWMO and their respective external design contracting partners.
Responsibilities
•Perform as a technical expert in designated technical discipline on assigned technical/engineering projects. Provide advice, guidance and solutions across the organization to support the technical program.
•Establish and oversee contracts with external contractors; participate in the development and issuance of contracting documents, Request for Proposals (RFP’s), bid evaluation, and selection of contractors.
•Review work plans, technical reports, design inputs and design outputs; monitor/report on contractor performance against work plans and baseline schedules. Troubleshoot and manage issues associated with project and contract management.
•Participate and chair technical meetings with cross-functional teams and identity issues causing conflict such as competing work priorities or objectives. Collaborate with impacted stakeholders to analyze alternative approaches and to reach mutual agreement on the issue/conflict resolutions.
•Lead projects and studies within assigned discipline involving non-standard and evolving requirements. Provide work direction to other technical staff assigned to their projects. Develops work plans, determine resource requirements, coordinate work efforts of cross-functional stakeholders, and adapt project activities to address changing priorities.
•Anticipate and resolve issues/conflicts/risks which pose as an impediment to successful completion of the project/deliverables using effective issues resolutions and risk management techniques.
•Produce technical and non-technical reports, presentations, and or other Design Input and Design Output documents supporting conceptual, preliminary and detailed design development.
•Provide generalist services to other aspects of the engineering program outside assigned discipline.
•Represent the NWMO or support other NWMO technical staff at public commission hearings, interfaces with other regulatory bodies, conferences and workshops, and public facing events, as required.
•Ensure all working activities, programs, studies and contracts reflect an awareness of the applicable legislative, NWMO, and Health and Safety requirement.
•When requested, participate in budget preparation, submissions, financial evaluation, and purchase justifications.
•Stay current with developments within field of expertise through reference to relevant technical publications, and regular interface with internal and external experts and research and educational bodies.
•Provide requested support to the upper line management in identifying and managing risks associated with assigned programs and projects using NWMO’s Risk Assessment process.
•Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
This is a Progression In-Place position. Applicants with lesser experience qualifications or experience may be considered for a more junior position and be progressed in place via a career development plan.
•A 4-year university degree in Mechanical engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Electrical or Instrumentation and Control engineering, or Nuclear Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
•6-8 years of relevant experience in one of the following areas: Instrumentation and Control, Mechanical Piping/Fire Protection or Nuclear Systems Engineering or Nuclear Operations.
•Experience in project management, including plan development, resourcing, schedule tracking, contract management and problem resolution.
•Experience in applying Conduct of Engineering and Engineering Change Control principles and processes during design development, construction, and commissioning phases of project lifecycle.
•Strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team and interact with external contractors.
•Experience in communicating effectively in both oral and written form including excellent professional writing and presentation skills.
•Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical specifications and procedures; governmental acts, laws and regulations; and industry codes, standards and best practices.
•Self-directed learner who displays initiative, problem recognition, synthesis and problem-solving abilities.
The following skills would be considered and asset:
•Registered as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers of Ontario
•Previous experience working in a safety critical and/or heavily regulated environment such as nuclear power generation, nuclear decommissioning, oil & gas industries, aerospace, pharmaceutical, and infrastructure development.
Other Information
Must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements.
Candidates residing in the Greater Toronto Area: Office Location – 22 St. Clair Avenue East until their role is required to relocate.
NWMO currently operates in a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office (Tuesdays being universal) and 2 days working from home.
