Role

The role of Senior Design Engineer sits within Network Planning & Regulation, Distribution Network, reporting to the Distribution Network Manager.

As Senior Design Engineer, you will support the Lead Design Engineer with development of Distribution Network (LV – 132kV) designs and updating the relevant strategies, policies and plans for the SPD/SPM networks to minimise system, economic, safety and environmental risks. You will support in maximising the performance of the distribution system expected by our customers, stakeholders, maximising returns in both the short and long term. You will be responsible for developing individual programmes of work and design of complex projects for development and delivery by the districts including asset modernisation, major new connections, reinforcement, and other activities. You will effectively represent SPEN on engineering technical issues in professional forums and within the regulatory environment.

What you’ll be doing

Support the Lead Design Engineer with the development and implementation of policies, strategies, engineering standards and specifications in accordance with best practice to ensure effective management of the asset base consistent with legal & licence requirements.

Development/update of distribution network models and perform power system analysis using IPSA/ Power Factory or equivalent software’s to identify the location, timing and magnitude of constraints and develop strategic network optioneering and planning – including the use of market based solutions, scheme design, innovation and prioritisation.

Support in development of long term investment plan for the distribution network including network modernisation, load related investment, system design, maintenance, innovation, and flexibility.

Support in development and implementation of investment policies, strategies, and system designs in accordance with best practice to ensure effective management of the asset base consistent with legal & licence requirements

Assist with the development of the distribution network plan and ensure it is in- compliance with planning standards such as NETS SQSS, Grid Code, Distribution Code, P2 and other relevant design and asset management standards.

Maintain a prioritised list of projects and develops project documentation at a level of detail sufficient to enable the Investment Planning and Design Teams to understand scope & requirements.

Management of network risks to minimise system, economic, safety and environmental risks in a cost efficient manner. This will include examining and evaluating alternative schemes and designs and development of network wide asset replacement programmes, policies, strategies and plans.

Engagement with customers and stakeholders to effectively communicate the network technical and security requirements ensuring that company’s position is well understood and viewed favourably.

Support Lead Design Engineer in on-going activities such as forecasting, flexibility tendering, regulatory reporting, and industry work groups.

What you’ll bring

Power Systems Engineering Design experience, preferably experience in performing complex power system studies (Load flow, short circuit, transient stability and power quality).

Knowledge of network design philosophy and policies, asset management techniques and practices.

Ability to deliver highly complex computationally intensive projects quickly and to a very high standard.

Ability to analyse and critically evaluate a complex range of technical, regulatory, commercial, and environmental factors when proposing innovative network strategies.

Ability to devise solutions to complex problems/challenges and applying innovative thinking where necessary.

Good influencing and communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to different audiences verbally and in writing.

Minimum Requirements* Degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant experience.

Knowledge of network analysis and design practices, asset management practices, cost assessment and cost benefit analysis techniques for ensuring efficient and well-justified investment.
Good communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to different audiences through reports, presentation, and technical drawings.
Strong IT literacy – for example: Microsoft Office suite, specialist engineering software packages etc.
Willing to travel within the UK and Europe.
Flexible approach to working hours to ensure the delivery of planned and unplanned activities
