Worker Type: Employee
Job Post End Date: 09/17/2025
About this opportunity:
Cenovus is currently looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer, based in our Calgary office.
This role contributes to electrical system reliability by supporting improvement projects and assisting field teams with safe, efficient, and cost-effective solutions. Working closely with stakeholders, this engineer helps identify and implement upgrades that improve safety, performance, and lifecycle value. Responsibilities include participating in design reviews, testing, commissioning, and investigations, as well as supporting the development of standards, models, and compliance documentation.
A successful candidate brings strong technical fundamentals, curiosity, and a willingness to learn. The role is hands-on, with opportunities to contribute directly to reliability projects and provide practical support to field teams. While not responsible for direct people management or sole decision-making, the position provides a valuable foundation for professional growth, exposure to the full lifecycle of electrical systems, and the chance to build skills that strengthen both the individual and the team.
What you’ll do:
- Provide subject matter expertise and technical leadership across electrical systems (24V to 260kV)
- Support operational facilities and lead reliability improvement projects
- Ensure compliance with internal and external standards
- Coordinate the safe and efficient operation of electrical assets such as UPS systems, motors, drives, switchgear, substations, and co-generation assets
- Engage with internal teams and external regulators, industry groups, and vendors
- Influence compliance outcomes and support the adoption of guidelines
Who you are:
Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:
- Legally authorized to work in Canada
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Alberta (APEGA) and/or Saskatchewan (APEGS) required. Must hold all certifications necessary to perform the job
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive electrical engineering experience, preferably within oil and gas, power generation, or heavy industrial environments
- Prior exposure to SAGD facility operations and design experience with 25kV and greater systems are considered strong assets
- Proficiency in power system design, analysis, and troubleshooting, including familiarity with ETAP software for system studies, GIS models, and hazard identification
- Strong understanding of the Alberta Safety Codes Act, the Canadian Electrical Code Part I, the Code for Electrical Installations at Oil and Gas Facilities, and the Alberta Electrical Utility Code
- Demonstrated expertise in protection and control systems, hazardous area classification, and electrical safety programs
- Hands-on knowledge of construction, commissioning, testing, operations, and maintenance of electrical equipment across the lifecycle, from 24V control systems to 260kV transmission facilities
We acknowledge the value of transferrable skills and may consider equivalent combinations of experience and education should you not meet a specific requirement.
Note: The application deadline for this position is 11:59 PM MT, September 16th, 2025.
Internal candidates that are currently in a lower grade will be assessed based on their sustained job performance, how they demonstrate the expected organizational competency behaviors and values and in discussions with their current leader prior to determining next steps.
