About The Role

Stelco has one opening for a Safety & Industrial Hygiene Specialist. This position will assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive safety and occupational health programs and conducting safety and process reviews to ensure compliance and continuous improvement. This includes providing monitoring and safety support for day-to-day operations, maintenance activities, project work, and contractor/vendor safety performance to ensure safe and efficient execution of all tasks.

The primary work location for this role will be the Stelco Lake Erie facility. However, the Manager reserves the right to modify the employee’s primary work location as needed to meet business needs.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

- Assist facilities in implementing corporate/plant/division specific Safety & Industrial Hygiene initiatives

- Collaborate with stakeholders, including Division and Area Managers, Union H&S representatives, employees, and relevant departments, to organize hazard identification workshops to develop, review and update Risk Register for the area based on findings, changes in processes, or organizational developments.

- Analyze safety data/trends (internal & external) and assist in the development of corrective action plans

- Collaborate on a scheduled basis with division and area managers in appraising the performance of units, reviewing division and area incident experience, and collaborate on recommendations and action to be taken by the respective unit concerning Safety & Industrial Hygiene issues

- Assist in the development of safety training modules and deliver select safety training as required.

- Conduct frequent reviews of established plant safety and industrial hygiene procedures to ensure ongoing effectiveness and compliance

- Assist in generating division specific information for monthly safety meetings. Audit random meetings for quality of information, presentation of instructor, and employee participation. Assist departments/divisions in implementing improvement plans for noted deficiencies

- Assist divisions in developing and implementing procedures including Safe Job Procedures, energy control procedures, Standard Practices and PPE requirements. Participate in Hazardous Job Meetings for tasks involving significant risks

- Periodically conduct safety conversations with employees as well as line management to ensure the consistent use and quality of the safety conversation program

- Conduct joint safety inspections and audits with Supervisors and bargaining unit Health & Safety (H&S) representatives. Utilize these inspections and audits to educate Supervisors and bargaining unit H&S representatives on hazard recognition and mitigation. Foster a collaborative environment where safety is a shared responsibility and knowledge is continuously exchanged.

- Conduct walk through of divisions observing conditions and work practices. Take immediate steps to modify unsafe practices and elicit required personnel to address housekeeping and unsafe conditions noted

- Interact with MOL Inspectors as required and follow up on issues arising from any visits

- Take on-call responsibilities, typically one week per month, to respond promptly to any safety incidents or emergencies that occur outside of regular working hours and provide expert guidance and support to ensure swift and effective resolution of safety issues.

- Participate in the pre-startup safety review of new facilities, equipment or processes in conjunction with Engineering, Maintenance and Operating personnel

- Participate in the development of plant specific safety and hygiene audit programs

- Research industry best practices i.e. CSA, ASME, ANSI, ACGIH, NFPA, MOL Guidelines, etc.

- Order and receive safety-related supplies and services as required

- Participate in the development and implementation of training programs for plant management and union

- Provide assistance in communicating new systems initiatives or system-related changes for any Safety and IH systems in use at plant locations, and provide feedback on new initiatives or changes as needed

- Participate in, recommend corrective actions and perform follow-ups for incident and injury investigations

Physical Demands for the role

Duties

This position requires the ability to meet specific physical demands essential for performing safety and industrial hygiene duties. The incumbent must:

- Meet Stelco respiratory protection program requirements.

- Safety is our highest priority, and safety procedures and guidelines must be adhered to at all times. This includes wearing personal protective equipment, such as hard hats, eye protection, hearing protection, respirators, flame retardant clothing and safety shoes with metatarsal protection at all times during a work shift;

- Be physically capable of conducting field inspections, audits, and walkthroughs in industrial environments, which may involve walking, climbing, standing for extended periods, and exposure to varying weather and environmental conditions.

Job Qualifications

What you bring to the table-

- Degree or Diploma in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or any closely related field

- 3 Years of experience in Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene in an Industrial environment, preferably in integrated steelmaking operations.

- CRSP, CSP, CRST or equivalent safety designation would be an asset

- Passion for Health and Safety as demonstrated by a commitment to professional learning and development in this field of study
