Since our inception in 2012, Steel Reef has supported the energy community in capturing wasted energy, processing and distributing associated natural gas and other products, and bringing in net new energy production and distribution for homes, communities and businesses.

Focusing our efforts within the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and Bakken Resource Play, Steel Reef has become a market leader in developing the emissions-to-energy practice to supply net new energy from flare gas, a previously unavailable source.

In 2024, Steel Reef entered into multiple long-term Power Purchase Agreements with SaskPower. Following construction of additional utility-grade electricity substations and generation turbines powered by recovered flare gas, Steel Reef will provide more than 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity within Saskatchewan and North Dakota, which could power more than 100,000 homes annually.

Position Summary:

Steel Reef is looking for a Process Engineer for our Calgary office. This position is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of Steel Reef assets, reporting directly to the Team Lead, Process Engineering.

Key Responsibilities: Support Safe and Reliable Operations of Steel Reef Assets:

Respond promptly to major plant issues and lead troubleshooting efforts;
Monitor long-term operational trends to identify performance or reliability issues;
Provide timely support to field operations and oversee technical changes through the Management of Change (MOC) process;
Complete technical reviews of critical plant safety systems such as pressure relief, flare and/or blowdown systems;
Assist in the development, enhancement, and implementation of elements within the Steel Reef Operations Management System (OMS);
Offer technical expertise during plant turnarounds and support the coordination of turnaround activities.

Optimize Plant Performance and Collaborate with Key Stakeholders:

Identify and implement opportunities to enhance equipment reliability and reduce operating costs;
Partner with project and business development teams to provide operational input that informs future project planning and proposals;
Provide operational input to the Business Development team on plant capabilities and limitations to support future growth and acquisitions;
Leverage knowledge of equipment operating limits to safely optimize throughput and maintain long-term reliability;
Oversee regulatory efforts, including programs such as PNG017 (measurement) compliance, PIMS, and PEIMS.


Drive Operational Excellence and Risk Management:

Promote a culture of continuous improvement and excellence in process safety;
Participate in HAZOPs and lead PHA’s on smaller scale facilities changes;
Represent operations in project discussions to ensure alignment, streamlined execution, successful start-ups and sustainable long term operations.


Required Skills, Experience & Education:

5 - 10 years operational/facilities experience in the oil and gas industry;
Experience with VMG(Symmetry), HYSYS or other process simulation software;
Previous experience completing process design work at an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) firm considered a major asset;
A Mechanical or Chemical Engineering Degree;
Must be a registered engineer with a provincial association;
Strong analytical, decision making, organizational and facilitator skills;
Ability to make timely technical decisions and recommendations;
Experience working in a multi-disciplined engineering environment;
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment as well as independently;
Willingness to travel regularly to operating sites;
Hold a valid driver's license;
Basic understanding of project economics;
Comfortable giving presentations and facilitating meetings;
Ability to travel to the USA for business meetings.

Our Steel Reef team has returned to the office, however, to provide our employees with flexibility, we have implemented a trial hybrid work model where employees have the option to work from home four (4) days per month.
