A press brake operator is a skilled manufacturing professional responsible for setting up and operating a press brake machine to bend and shape sheet metal according to blueprints, ensuring precise dimensions and quality by adjusting tooling, aligning materials, and performing regular maintenance checks on the machine.
- Plans sequence of operations, applying knowledge of physical properties of metal
- Interpret blueprints and specifications to properly set up the press brake with the correct tooling (dies and punches) for the desired bend
- Operate the press brake to bend the sheet metal to the specified angles and dimensions, making adjustments as needed
- Makes machine adjustments (back gauge, ram, etc) and changes dies as necessary
- Lifts, positions, and secures work piece between dies of machine, holding fixtures, dies to machine bed, using gauges, templates, shims and hand tools
- Inspect bent parts for accuracy, finish, and defects, making adjustments to the machine or tooling as necessary
- Measures work piece and verifies dimensions and weight, using calipers, template, straightedge, and scale.
- Perform routine cleaning of the press brake, and report any malfunctions or potential issues
- Adhere to all safety protocols related to operating heavy machinery, including proper use of personal protective equipment
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three (3) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to read and interpret prints and drawings
- Able to identify and select tooling and perform equipment set-up and changeover
- Able to inspect completed work using simple measuring devices such as tape measures, square and protractor and caliber
- Must be able to perform simple mathematical calculations
- Ability to communicate clearly both written and orally
- Regularly required to lift/carry 20 to 40 pounds occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds frequently
- Regularly required to bend, stoop, kneel and reach
- Regularly required to stand and walk
- Regularly required to push or pull objects up to 40 pounds
- Work performed in a shop environment
- Exposed to any number of elements, but with none present to the extent of being disagreeable
- May work at different workstations as production needs require, or shifts from one station to another during the assembly process.
