About Us:
Ubicquia is in the business of making cities smarter with connected infrastructure. Our data products include street light control and monitoring, electrical grid monitoring, and computer vision traffic monitoring systems.
Our products need to handle information at massive scale and extend well beyond basic IoT devices. We're looking for engineers and developers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information storage/retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, and artificial intelligence. As a Ubicquia employee, you will work on a specific project critical to the company’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our developers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across technologies and disciplines as we continue to push technology forward.
Ubicquia is looking for a Power Grid data scientist to work in the Data team of our Customer Experience and Data Analytics department. This team member’s main tasks involve:
•Analyzing the data that is created by our electrical grid monitoring sensors to create value-added insights and notifications about the state of our utility partners’ electrical infrastructure. This is a Data as a Service (DaaS) initiative. The data scientist will perform time series analysis, anomaly detection, and analyze high-resolution oscillography data, to identify root causes and descriptions of power quality events occurring on the electrical grid. The eventual goal is to detect these in real-time and match them to appropriate responses from utility partners.
•Analyzing cause codes and the output of grid monitoring sensors to predict equipment malfunction, failure and maintenance events before they happen. Proper validation and statistical tests will be required to ensure high precision and recall of any predictive analytic.
•The data scientist will use their Electrical Engineering, and power grid knowledge to look for signatures that identify events in our data. Proper evaluation methods will be used to monitor performance and identify areas of improvement. Python scripts that find these signatures and productionizing them to be included in our Analytics Engine to generate events and reports on a cadence will also be expected.
•Performing reliability analysis for new field deployments of a particular sensor or existing deployments under new conditions. The data scientist will analyze when and how reliability issues occur and build visualization tools in the form of control charts and reliability graphs on Grafana to monitor ongoing deployments.
Responsibilities:
•Understand business problems and uncover value using data mining techniques
•Engage with subject matter experts to prioritize and orient data analysis
•Act as subject matter expert on the subject of power grid analysis
•Own machine learning algorithm creation from data cleaning all the way to maintenance of models in production
•Design and create new algorithms and applications using grid data to improve power quality and reliability of the grid
•Perform root-cause analysis using data about failures in the field
•Design experiments to create statistically significant information on business problems
•Create visualizations to communicate findings effectively internally and externally
Qualifications:
•BSc (MSc preferred) in Electrical Engineering, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent
•Minimum of 5 years of experience with Python and data science libraries like Numpy, Pandas, Scipy
•Extensive experience with statistical testing of claims, data science frameworks, machine learning algorithms
•Experience solving real-world Power Grid problems using data analysis
•Experience with grid simulation software (e.g. MATLAB/SIMULINK) in simulating realistic and complex power grid
•Deep understanding of power grid analysis, transient state, frequency domain, oscillography analysis, and machine learning applications related to the electrical grid
•Knowledge of grounding, electrical fault analysis, grid protection, lightning, power lines, and transformers simulation
•Ability to efficiently read, understand, and implement state-of-the-art research papers and industry standards in the field of power grids
•Experience working with databases (SQL) and cloud computing resources (AWS)
•Experience with development best practices like version control, documentation, and unit testing
•Experience working independently and presenting results to both management and technical audiences
•Excellent oral and written communication skills
•Collaborative and positive attitude
Nice to Have
•Reliability testing certifications
•Database design experience
•Proven record of research in the field of power grids
•Proven record of applying data science and machine learning skills to Power Grid problems
•Experience with HIL (Hardware-in-the-loop) tests
