The Asset Performance Team in Predictive Insights is looking for a person with a strong interest in the design, specification, modelling and performance analysis of reciprocating and centrifugal compressors and their associated drivers.
The Performance Engineer, reporting to the Asset Performance manager, is responsible for developing, maintaining, and utilizing models for reciprocating and centrifugal compressors, as well as their respective drivers, which include reciprocating engines, gas turbines, and electric motors.
They will be tasked with leveraging the models along with real-time (Aveva PI) and unit analysis (Windrock) data along with other software solutions to monitor, troubleshoot and optimize the performance of the TC Energy fleet of over 1100 compressors. They will do this in cooperation with our stakeholders, including Operations Technical Services, Commercial Operations, Business Development, Project Development, Projects, and Field Operations.
Success in this position will require not only technical expertise but also strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams. The Performance Engineer will interact regularly with internal and external partners, using their insights to drive performance improvements and operational excellence. Curiosity, adaptability, and a continuous improvement mindset will be key attributes for thriving in this environment.
The successful candidate has proven skills, competencies and capacity to work both independently and collaboratively with a keen focus on technical details, forward thinking, and problem solving. This individual should be comfortable with data analysis, process development and optimization as well as decision making.
Attention to details and the ability to focus on longer term projects is desirable. Experience with ACI eRCM Pro modeling software, Aveva PI System tools, Ariel7 and PLC Logic are a plus. Demonstrated interest or experience in using Python scripting to automate and optimize compressor performance analytics is also a plus, as it enhances the team's ability to deliver actionable insights and streamline operational processes.
- Build, test, and deploy compressor and driver models for new compression units and update them due to changes from modernization and upgrade projects
- Develop and design compressor configurations to support Growth/Modernization Projects and day to day operation, while collaborating with vendors and vendor software
- Use extensive knowledge of gas pipeline operations to present compressor design options which meet the evolving needs of our business to key stakeholders
- Monitor performance and acceptance testing with applicable vendors for new rotating compression equipment
- Investigate and resolve Performance Anomaly Detection Program anomalies
- Document the investigative process, ensuring that optimal amount of information is captured around the identified issues and actions taken to mitigate the anomaly and prevent re-occurrence
- Support ACI controls and second processor installations during compressor controls upgrades
- Support and resolve Reliability Application for Compressor Reporting (RACR) issues
- Research and develop ways to improve the emissions intensity of our operations through compressor design and operation optimization
- Use knowledge of gas compression operations and performance to support the design and development of the future Asset Surveillance system compressor performance monitoring modules
- Collaborate with other members of the team, Predictive Insights, Managers, Directors, and Gas Control/Planning to improve overall asset performance and operation both short/long term
- Other tasks as required
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline
- 6 or more years of related experience or similar responsibilities
- For Canadian candidates, registered as a P.Eng in the prevailing jurisdiction in good standing (e.g., APEGA in Alberta).
- Knowledge and experience of natural gas pipeline operation and associated systems
- Knowledge and experience of compressor model development and tuning as well as compressor performance analysis
- Knowledge and experience of compressor design and specification for pipeline and storage applications
- Detailed knowledge in gas turbines, reciprocating engines and combustion principles
- Experience with reading and interpreting PLC logic is a plus
- Experience working with and presenting to various stakeholders and multi-functional groups
